New England College Challenge, fall preview of regionals in the spring, featured tough college ultimate all over the place. Pretty much every team from the region was there. We started the weekend with Will's specially made game tape of classic sports intro music and a game against Dartmouth, which beat last year's Harvard team to knock us out of regionals. A revenge matchup? Whatever it was, good running and great patient offence wore Dartmouth down, and we walked away with a 13-8 win. Which was followed by our much anticipated game with Brown. Playing from behind for much of the game, Harvard finally pulled even at 9, but could not quite sustain the intensity and fell 13-10. After two tight games, a letdown was in order, and sure enough our crosstown rivals from BU came out strong, playing us even throughout the first half. It looked like it might go down to the wire, but with the bye game coming up and the promising sight of the Taco Wagon providing the last bit of motivation, Harvard finally pulled ahead to win 11-8. A shutout against a depleted Holy Cross team finished the day, and the Red Line had finished 2nd in their pool for the day. Meanwhile, on the other side of the Devens planned community recreation field, the Harvard b-line was busy ripping up the competition. Big wins against Brown-b and Wentworth helped cap a 4-0 day for the b-teamers. Great grabs and hot d were everywhere, and credit should also be given to b-team captains Mac, Ken, Charlie, and Mark who motivated the mostly freshman squad by rewarding good play with promises of beer. Great job guys! This morning a tired and sore a-team and a 7-man b-team returned to Devens for some more action. The a-teamers won going away against Amherst to open the day, but ran into a strong Tufts team in the quarterfinals. They were a bit too much to handle, on this day, and it was all over after a 15-6 loss. Perhaps 8-ball said it best - "Tufts sucks." Play of the weekend. Several contenders, including .... Piotr's full extended layout for a goal against Brown, followed by a rowdy spike. Carlos's amazing layout deep grab against Tufts (3rd or 4th point?), while we were still in it. Noah's layout endzone grab to win the game against Holy Cross, a very fine catch. And then there was the bone-jarring collision between Skinner and some fucker on BU, heard loud and clear from the sidelines, which makes the list on the sheer principle of it.
