Skating towards a cure for cancer
CAMBRIDGE – Top Olympic and world skaters, including Harvard University student Emily Hughes, will do triple axels and toe loops to benefit the Jimmy Fund at An Evening with Champions. In its 38th year, the premier figure skating exhibition will be held on Friday, Oct. 12, at 8 p.m. and Saturday, Oct.13, at 7 p.m. at Harvard University 's Bright Hockey Center . A silent auction will take place half an hour before each show. Paul Wylie, a 1992 Olympic silver medalist and class of 1990 Harvard graduate, will host the performance. This will be his 23rd appearance at An Evening with Champions.
Since its founding in 1970 by former US champion John Misha Petkevich, An Evening with Champions has been run entirely by Harvard University students, raising more than $2.3 million for the Jimmy Fund, which supports research and care for adult and pediatric cancers at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. On Saturday afternoon of the show, children of Jimmy Fund families will also have a chance to skate with the performers.
Presented by Procter & Gamble, this year's show will feature 2007 National Pair Skating Champions Brooke Castile and Benjamin Okolski, 2006 Olympic Silver Medalists and 4-time National Ice Dancing Champions Tanith Belbin and Benjamin Agosto, 1994 Olympic Champion Oksana Baiul, 2007 National Silver Medalist Emily Hughes, 3-time National Bronze Medalist Matt Savoie, 16-time National Synchronized Skating Champions the Haydenettes of Massachusetts and many more world class and local skaters. The show is also sponsored by Ameriprise Financial.
Tickets cost $32 for adults, $12 for children and senior citizens and $8 for undergraduates. Group rates are also available for groups of 10 or more. Harvard's Bright Hockey Center is located on 79 North Harvard Street in Allston.
