When: Three afternoons a week; 3:30-6:30. You only need to come one of these days. We meet in front of Lamont Library at approximately 3:30 and take Phillips Brooks House vans down to the housing projects in Dorchester where we tutor and return to Harvard by 6:30pm. There are also field trips three times a semester -- a great way to get to know your child in a non-classroom setting.
Where: Lena Park Community Center; Dorchester, Massachusetts. We enroll students ages 6-12 from the neighboring Franklin Hill and Franklin Field housing projects in Dorchester.
Why FASE: We know there are many programs to choose from, but this is what makes our program special and different: FASE is a 1-on-1 tutoring program which offers the opportunity to develop intimate relationships with the children we serve and their families. You will be paired with one child whom you will work with for the semester. We are also smaller than other programs so you will have the opportunity to develop close relationships with all of the children. Many of the children come from overcrowded classrooms and single-parent households in very difficult environments. Our program brings children from Franklin Field and Franklin Hill together in an effort to appease the historical tensions and rivalries between the two communities. This semester, we are also beginning a new language/cultural exchange between our FASE kids and children living in the Galápagos Islands in Ecuador.
Our Goals:
Who: You! All it takes is one (or more) days a week and a commitment to nurture a lasting friendship with the child you tutor.
