About Us

HUFE's 1999-2000 experiences began with the unique opportunity to play in Salem, MA at their annual Eerie Events. As apparent from our current preliminary schedule, we hope to head north again this Halloween. In November, the Ensemble donned white shirts and tan pants (our official "casual wear") to play a Boismortier piece and Cassatio in D at the Leverett Fall Coffeehouse. Additional gigs during the fall semester included performances at the Holyoke Center and various holiday appearances in the community. Early in January we joined forces with the talented Percussion Ensemble to present a spectacular Winter Concert. We performed Peter Schickele's Monochrome I for Eight Flutes and Monochrome V for Eight Flutes, a pair of technically challenging contemporary pieces; Flute Quintet (I-Prelude and Fugue, II. Chorale and Galop) by William Presser; and Giovanni Gabrieli's Sonata Pian' E Forte. Par usual, the ensemble was eager to play at the Leverett Spring Coffeehouse. However, we glitzed up both our appearance and program to match the event's lounge-singer atmosphere. Perhaps the most significant performance of HUFE to date was our Flutes in Spring concert on April 30, 2000. Drawing from several previous performances and incorporating newly prepared pieces, 12 players filled Memorial Church with enchanting flute music in our first ever independent concert. The turnout was astonishing, and we look forward to enticing an even larger crowd during this coming year. We concluded our year with a brief showing over Arts First Weekend.
