The Conservative Book Club is a new project of the Harvard Republican
Club. It is a chance for conservatives across campus to come together
and study some of the basic principles of our political ideology as they
are expressed in literature. As conservatives, we pride ourselves in
having ideas that we hold to be truly based in sound reason. As
efficacious as Harvard is in academic pursuit, it is clear that we do
not always get many good chances to study the ideas that constitute our
ideology in a constructive and amicable atmosphere. This club is an
attempt to develop intellectual conservatism on campus. We plan to hold
friendly and thought-provoking discussions amongst club members--guided
by experts made available to us through the resources of Harvard's
faculty and alumni--with a frequency of about one book per month. As
part of the club, and for the broader conservative community at Harvard,
we will also compose a comprehensive list and make available for
purchase those books, taken from the full mélange of American and
Western literary tradition, that best articulate the conservative
ideology. We encourage you to be a part of this important step for
conservatism at Harvard. Email Ryan McCaffrey at rmccaffr@fas if you'd like to join.
The Book of the Month for April 2006 is Manliness by Prof. Harvey Mansfield. Throughout the month of April, we will be reading Manliness, and are currently in the process of planning a catered dinner discussion with Prof. Mansfield himself before the start of reading period.
