Quote of the week...

"And by [the Pope's] own courageous example in the face of illness and suffering, he showed us the path to a culture of life where the dignity of every human person is respected, and human life at all its stages is revered and treasured."

- President Bush, in his weekly radio address on Saturday.

I. HRC IOP Summer Stipend Workshop - Monday! - John Souther (souther@fas) is conducting a workshop on applications for the IOP Summer Stipend tomorrow (Monday) starting at 5 PM in the Quincy JCR. Sample essays and help with the application will be provided, and there will be pizza too! The stipend applications are due on Friday, so this should be helpful for those of you who have been putting it off.

II. HRC Poker Night - Saturday! - Come play poker with us this Saturday at 10 PM in Kirkland H-24. We'll have tables with $5 and $10 buy-ins, as well as refreshments. For info contact Stephen Dewey (sdewey@fas).

III. HRC "Intellectual Property" Study Break - Wednesday! - HRC's next economic policy study break is this Wednesday at 9 PM in the Quincy Spindell Room (at the back of the dining hall), hosted by the Policy Committee and RSEP. This week's topic is intellectual property rights, particularly regarding music downloads and copyright laws. As usual, Finale's dessert will be provided! For more info contact CR (sincock@fas) or Mark (mshepard@fas).

IV. Congratulations to New MACR Chair Mike Miltenberger! - Congratulations to HRC Freshman Member-at-Large Michael Miltenberger, who was elected Chair of the Massachusetts Alliance of College Republicans on Saturday. Mike ran on a platform of reform and growth and would appreciate your suggestions (mmiltenb@fas). Thanks also to outgoing MACR Chair Brad Smith '05 and MACR Vice-Chair Matthew Downer '07 for their hard work on behalf of the MA GOP.

V. Sen. Brownback at the Law School - Friday! - U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback (R-KS) will speak at the HLS Society for Law, Life & Religion symposium on human cloning and stem cell research on Friday in the HLS Langdell Hall North Classroom. Sen. Brownback is the author of the "Human Cloning Prohibition Act" and a possible contender in the 2008 presidential election. For more information contact the society at sllr@law.harvard.edu.

VI. It's "Take Back The Night" Week! - This Monday to Friday is Take Back The Night week, and HRC is a cosponsor. TBTN is a week of events dedicated to exposing and combatting sexual violence and violence against women. We'd encourage all HRC members to participate. A schedule of events can be viewed at: http://www.hcs.harvard.edu/~rus/tbtn/allevents.shtml.

VII. HPU Thursday - "Multiculturalism and Education" - HPU's topic of the week is "Multiculturalism and Education" - should a Western canon be at the heart of the liberal arts education? Come debate your fellow students at 6:00 on Thursday in the IOP First Floor Conference Room. Contact Vivek (ramasw@fas) with questions.

VIII. Job Opportunity - Work for Fmr. Asst. Attorney General! - Seniors: Want to work for former U.S. Assistant Attorney General Viet Dinh, author of the PATRIOT Act? His D.C. consulting firm, Bancroft Associates PLLC, is looking for a full-time executive assistant. This is a good opportunity for those looking to defer from law school for a year. Responsibilities include firm administration, factual, legal and policy-related research, media materials production and event planning. Contact Dinh's outgoing executive assistant and HRC alum Candice Chiu '04 for more details (candice.chiu@post.harvard.edu).

IX. Become a House Rep - We are still looking for volunteers in a few houses to be House Reps. You will be responsible for finding Republicans in your House and getting them to come to social events and General Meetings. You will get a budget to throw mini-events every semester. We still need House Reps in Dunster, Leverett, Lowell and Pfoho. Let John (souther@fas) know if you are interested.

X. Get Your New HRC T-Shirt! - T-shirts are $10 and can be purchased from John Souther; email him at souther@fas.harvard.edu. To see the design for yourself, go to: http://hcs.harvard.edu/~gop/hrc_merchandise.html
