Quote of the week...

"As the Iraqi security forces gain strength and experience, we can lessen our troop presence in the country without losing our capability to effectively defeat the terrorists... We are pleased [Sen. Biden] shares our view that the way to a democratic and peaceful Iraq is through aggressively training Iraqi police and soldiers, rebuilding the country's infrastructure and forging political compromises between Iraqi factions."

- from a press release by the White House this past week

Bush, left, shakes hands with China's President Hu Jintao following their joint statement in the Great Hall of the People on the edge of Tiananmen Square, Sunday, Nov. 20, 2005 in Beijing, China. Bush called on China on Sunday to expand religious, political and social freedoms and urged steps to reduce Beijing's huge trade surplus with the United States. President Hu Jintao promised steps to resolve economic frictions. (AP Photo/Charles Dharapak)

Like most Americans, Iraqis look forward to the day when U.S. and other foreign troops go home. But as in the United States, opinions in Iraq are mixed over what the timing and conditions for the departure should be. (AP Photo/Jacob Silberberg, File)

I. Goodbye Event for Outgoing Board / No General Mtg. - We're going to have a social event this week to commemorate the end of HRC's 116th board and promote unity as we elect a new board. This will take the place of our general meeting. Details will be sent out later in the week over gop-announce and gop-open.

II. MACR Mini-Convention - RSVP Now! - All of the Boston-area College Republican groups will be getting together for a mini-conference this Friday, December 2nd. The conference is short, from 7 to 9 PM, and we'll probably do something social afterwards. This is a great way to meet people from other schools. If you want to come, please RSVP by Tuesday at 5 to gop@hcs.harvard.edu (you can also email that address with questions).

III. "Why France Burns" Study Break - Wednesday! - HRC's next study break is this Wednesday at 8 in the Leverett D-entry dining room (the regular room). This week's topic is, "Why France Burns: Economic Problems Underlying the French Riots." This study break is sponsored by RSEP; contact Mark with questions (mshepard@fas).

IV. BU Republicans Winter Gala - Tuesday! - The BU Republicans are hosting a "Winter Gala" this Tuesday from 7:30 to 11. Attendees at the Gala will include the US Ambassador to Yemen and Qatar, Charles Dunbar. Nice hors d'ourves will be served and there will be a string quartet! The cost to attend is $20, and dress is business, black tie optional. If you want to go, email us at gop@hcs.harvard.edu.

V. HRC Elections on December 7th at 8PM in Emerson 105! - The date and time have now been set, and a week and a half remain in the campaign period. The declared candidates are:

President Stephen Dewey '07
Vice President
Secretary
Treasurer Mark Shepard '08
* Membership Director
* Member-at-Large Meghan Grizzle '07

* Candidates may declare to run for these positions at any time including the night of the election.

You must have paid dues prior to midnight on Wednesday, November 16th to vote. Voters who have a legitimate conflict and cannot attend the election must email Election Commission Chair Zach Singer (singer@fas) by December 5th. Voters who are allowed to vote absentee must turn in their ballot in person no earlier than 7 PM on December 5th.

VI. Join the "Harvard Students for Missile Defense" Facebook Group! - Join the "Harvard Students for Missile Defense" facebook group to show your support for a missile defense shield! You can search for "Missile Defense" or visit http://harvard.facebook.com/group_profile.php?gid=19618 once you're logged in.

VII. Paintball vs. the Harvard Dems - If you are interested in playing a game of paintball against the Harvard Democrats, please fill out the following survey to help the organizers: http://inventacorp.com/paintball

VIII. Debate "Elitism at Harvard" at HPU - Thursday - HPU's topic of the week is "Elitism at Harvard," whether it exists and to what degree. More specifically, the discussion will probably touch on final clubs, Dormaid, and the admissions process. The discussion is at 6 on Thursday in the IOP, and pizza will be served.

IX. Gaylord Study Group - Wednesdays - Joe Gaylord, the author of the Contract with America and the 1994 campaign manager of the year, is leading a study group at the IOP this semester. He will be discussing how to win campaigns in the 21st century from both a candidate and a strategist perspective. The schedule is uncertain given the end of the semester, so contact Josh for details (jdowner@fas).

X. Buy a T-Shirt - You can buy an HRC T-shirt for $10 by emailing John Souther at souther@fas.harvard.edu to arrange for payment and shipping/pickup.

XI. Pay Dues - If you haven't paid your $5 dues for the year yet, you can do so by mailing it with your name and email address to Meghan Grizzle, 195 Leverett Mail Center, Cambridge, MA 02138. Paying dues gets you a membership card, priority in our events and other benefits.

Read up on Iraq Progress - We've heard a lot of accusations from the liberal media about the supposed lack of progress in Iraq, but that outlook is demonstrably false. This week, read an opposing point of view on Iraq for the sake of balance, and so you can discuss the issue with your friends. Here are some resources to get you started:
