Quote of the week...

"Harvard’s janitors are a part of the Harvard community. But if 'living wage' advocates succeed in parlaying janitors’ inclusion in our community into a pay rate far above what is fair, they will set a dangerous precedent for other Harvard employees and likely lower Harvard hiring in the future."

- An editorial in The Crimson published Thursday opposing an increase in the "living wage" paid to Harvard janitors. You can read the full editorial at: http://www.thecrimson.com/article.aspx?ref=509042

Mrs. Schlafly was well-received and made a powerful case for the importance of the conservative grassroots. I. HRC Trip to DC - Registration Closes Tuesday at Noon - Registration for HRC's first-ever trip to Washington D.C. will close this Tuesday, so this is your last chance to get a seat. Confirmed events include a tour of the RNC and meeting with RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman, a meeting with senior Bush speechwriter John McConnell in the White House, a party with the Georgetown Republicans and election-weekend campaigning for the Kilgore for Governor campaign. Several other exciting events are also in the works. We will leave in the early morning of the 3rd and get back at night on the 5th, so you'll have all day Sunday to catch up on work.

There are only a handful of seats remaining and registration will close Tuesday at noon. To reserve a seat you must pay us your $50 non-refundable deposit. The total cost of the trip will be only $70 including the deposit. To pay and reserve a seat, contact Stephen Dewey (sdewey@fas).

II. General Meeting Wednesday - Our next general meeting is this Wednesday at 10 PM in the Winthrop Tonkens Room. As usual, we will meet at 9:45 at the John Harvard statue to walk over together, or you can come on your own.

III. HRC Poker Night - Saturday - HRC's next poker night is this Saturday from 9-12 in the Loker Coffeehouse. Come and win some money from us!

IV. HRL Hosts Mansfield for Speech Tuesday - Join Harvard Right to Life for a speech by Harvey Mansfield entitled "Feminism and the Autonomy of Women" this Tuesday, October 18, at 7 PM in Sever 113. For questions about this event or how to get involved in HRL, contact Meghan Grizzle (mgrizzle@fas).

V. Conservative Women's Conference a Success! - Thanks to everybody who made the Right Here Right Now conservative women's conference a success, especially Jen Raymond and Meghan Grizzle. The Conservative Women's Caucus did a great job and we look forward to more great work from them in the future.

VI. Gaylord Study Group - Wednesdays - Joe Gaylord, the author of the Contract with America and the 1994 campaign manager of the year, will be leading a study group at the IOP every Wednesday at 4:00pm. He will be discussing how to win campaigns in the 21st century from both a candidate and a strategist perspective. We encourage you all to participate.

VII. Buy a T-Shirt - You can buy an HRC T-shirt for $10 by emailing John Souther at souther@fas.harvard.edu to arrange for payment and shipping/pickup.

VIII. Pay Dues - If you haven't paid your $5 dues for the year yet, you can do so by mailing it with your name and email address to Meghan Grizzle, 195 Leverett Mail Center, Cambridge, MA 02138. Paying dues gets you a membership card, priority in our events and other benefits.

Sign the Petition Against the Kelo Decision - A petition has been created to urge Congress and the various state governments to pass a constitutional amendment to overturn the Kelo v. New London decision by the Supreme Court. The Kelo decision allows the government to use its powers of eminent domain to seize private property for private use, whereas eminent domain had previously been restricted to use for strictly public ends. The Kelo decision is unambiguously terrible and needs to be opposed. You can read more about the decision and sign the petition here: http://www.petitiononline.com/5amend/petition.html  Also, please forward this petition to everybody you know.
