Quote of the week...

"The purpose of the Miers debate is to ensure that we are doing the very best we can to move the nation in the right direction. And when all is said and done, we will be even stronger and more focused on our agenda and defeating those who obstruct it, just in time for 2006 and 2008. Lest anyone forget, for several years before the 1980 election, we had knockdown battles within the GOP. The result: Ronald Reagan won two massive landslides."

- Rush Limbaugh, in an editorial published on the Wall Street Journal's OpinionJournal.com last Monday. You can read the full editorial here: www.opinionjournal.com/forms/printThis.html?id=110007417

I. Lottery Now for Catered Lunch with Reagan Image-Maker - Mike Deaver, Ronald Reagan's Deputy Chief of Staff and Communications Director, will visit Harvard this Thursday at noon for a catered lunch available exclusively through HRC. Please lottery for this event by emailing gop@hcs.harvard.edu. Mr. Deaver will also be present at Ben Ginsburg's study group at 4 in L166 at the IOP.

II. HRC Football Tailgate Saturday - HRC will host a tailgate at the football game against Dartmouth this Saturday at noon at the Harvard Stadium. We'll be near the metal bleachers at the outdoor track. Athletes are particularly welcome, as are freshmen with their parents. If you plan on coming, please email your Harvard ID number to Steven Seidel (sseidel@fas) so that we can use it to get food. Beer will also be served.

III. "Congressional Spending" Discussion @ Study Break Wed. - Join us for a study break this Wednesday as we discuss current Congressional spending discipline or the lack thereof. The study break is hosted by RSEP and will be Wednesday at 8PM in the Leverett D-entry Dining Room (the same as last time). Finale's dessert will be provided as usual. Questions, email Mark Shepard (mshepard@fas).

IV. "Sex Trafficking" Informational Movie - Tonight - The IOP Policy Group to Stop Sex Trafficking and Slavery is screening a movie entitled "Human Trafficking" this Monday (today) at 9PM in the IOP Living Room. The movie deals with the sex trade in America and the human trafficking that enables it. Ben and Jerry's ice cream will be served. Because of the hour you will need to enter through the main IOP entrance, not the JFK street entrance. For more information contact Loui Itoh (itoh@fas) or call her at 857-928-6834.

V. "The Demise of Fact in Political Discussion" - Tuesday - Kathleen Jamieson of the Annenberg Public Policy Center at UPenn will deliver an address at the Radcliffe Institute this Tuesday entitled, "The Demise of Fact in Political Discussion." Ms. Jamieson argues that the amount of agreed-upon facts in political discource is decreasing and that facts are increasingly molded to fit partisan preconceptions. The address is scheduled for 4:30 PM in the Askwith Lecture Hall in Longfellow Hall. The institute is at 13 Appian Way.

VI. Contribute to the Harvard Israel Review - The Harvard Israel Review (HIR) is looking for additional conservative and right-leaning staffers and writers. HIR is a student-run journal about Middle Eastern politics, Jewish history, Zionist thought and more. To get involved or learn more, contact Rachel Friedman (friedman@law.harvard.edu).

VII. Opening for One Male in DC Trip - The DC trip has filled up, but one current attendee is looking to sell his seat to any interested male (it has to be a guy because of our rooming arrangements). If you're interested, email Stephen (sdewey@fas).

VIII. HRC Blog Name Chosen - After a lot of discussion over gop-open and elsewhere, we settled on the name RedIvy.org for our new blog. The blog will be launched by next Sunday, so stay tuned!

IX. Gaylord Study Group - Wednesdays - Joe Gaylord, the author of the Contract with America and the 1994 campaign manager of the year, will be leading a study group at the IOP every Wednesday at 4:00pm. He will be discussing how to win campaigns in the 21st century from both a candidate and a strategist perspective. We encourage you all to participate.

X. Buy a T-Shirt - You can buy an HRC T-shirt for $10 by emailing John Souther at souther@fas.harvard.edu to arrange for payment and shipping/pickup.

XI. Pay Dues - If you haven't paid your $5 dues for the year yet, you can do so by mailing it with your name and email address to Meghan Grizzle, 195 Leverett Mail Center, Cambridge, MA 02138. Paying dues gets you a membership card, priority in our events and other benefits.

Thanks Senator Coburn - Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK) has introduced an amendment to the Transportation Bill that would cut pork from that bill and use it to pay for repairs to infrastructure damaged by Hurricane Katrina. In doing so, Sen. Coburn has placed himself at the forefront of efforts to restore fiscal conservatism to the national budget and against the majority of senators who have strayed from that principle. Go to the following web address to thank Sen. Coburn for his defense of the taxpayer: http://coburn.senate.gov/index.cfm?FuseAction=Contact.Home

Incidentally, Sen. Coburn has agreed to meet with HRC members during our trip to D.C.
