Welcome,
Class of 2009 Republicans! - All of us at HRC
look forward to meeting you soon as you begin your first
year at Harvard College. We hope you'll join HRC when you
get here, not just for our first event or at the
activities fair, but for the next four years.
The
Harvard Republican Club is a vibrant community of
conservatives that has provided many of us with some of
our best college experiences. This past year our
activities ranged from weekends campaigning for President
Bush in New Hampshire to club socials and parties to
speakers and debates with top officials from the RNC and
the White House. HRC has a membership roll of more than
a thousand students, and many of our members make their
best
friends through the club.
Involvement
in HRC is also a solid way to gain leadership experience
for the real world. HRC is one of the most active
organizations on campus with several events per week, and
we recently won the CRNC's award for the most active
College Republican chapter in the country. HRC alums
include former Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge and
Massachusetts Lt. Governor and gubernatorial hopeful Kerry
Healey. HRC has a number of divisions dedicated to
different aspects of the club, so you can get involved
in the activities that appeal to you most. You can join
one
of these at our first board meeting.
To get
a better idea of what HRC does, we'd encourage you to look
at some of our bulletins from this past year, which can
be
found at http://www.harvardgop.org/hrc_weekly.html (note
the underscore "_")
We'll
see you soon!
II.
Join Us at the Activity Fair! - If you haven't
already become a member, or if you want to talk to
us about anything, pay dues or buy a T-shirt, then stop
by
our table at the freshman activities fair on Monday,
September 12th from 11:30 to 2 (everybody will be there).
HRC will be in the political section. We'll also have free
HRC pens and candy and if you pay your dues, you'll
get a swanky membership card :). Being a dues-paid
member also entitles you to preference in our ticket
lotteries and is one requirement for voting in our
elections.
III.
First Event: Ice Cream Bash, Thursday September 15, 7-8
- This will be held in Littauer M-16, next to the Science
Center. It is not listed in the Calendar of
Opening Days! Come meet your fellow Republicans
in the Class of 2009, as well as upperclass HRC members.
A brief talk will be delivered by Professor Gregory Mankiw,
who was Chair of the President's Council of Economic
Advisors and who will teach Harvard's famous Ec-10
course this year.
IV. HRC
Weekly: Keeping You Up-to-Date - This
fall, you'll start to receive the HRC Weekly
newsletter at the beginning of every week, much like this
one. The Weekly contains an official listing of all
upcoming HRC events, plus additional events and
announcements of interest to Harvard Republicans. If at
any time you want something to be listed in the Weekly,
you can send a description, time and date to Stephen Dewey
at sdewey@fas.harvard.edu.
We also encourage you to submit photos of HRC events to
Stephen for inclusion in the Weekly sidebar and in our
website's photos section, www.harvardgop.org/photos.html.
Starting this semester, we also intend to include weekly
"action items" in the bulletin drawn from the
national and state parties, and sometimes from our own
efforts.
HRC also
has a second email list, gop-announce, which is used
occasionally for time-sensitive official updates.
V. A Note on this Email - This email was
sent to all prefrosh who gave us their email address at
the prefrosh activities fair. We also sent this email to
prefrosh who list themselves as "conservative"
or "very conservative" on thefacebook.com, or
who are members of the "Class of 2009
Republicans" or "Harvard Republican Club"
groups there. If you do not wish to receive our weekly
emails, please accept our apologies. Simply respond
to this email and let us know and we will remove you
immediately. Freshmen with an FAS account will automatically have their non-FAS account removed soon.
