I. RESPONSE TO THE SLAM STAND FOR SECURITY CAMPAIGN For Immediate Release: 30 April 2007 The Harvard Republican Club (HRC) is concerned about the misguided efforts of the Student Labor Action Movement (SLAM) and its “Stand for Security” campaign. We stand behind Harvard's response to these actions. While the HRC recognizes the importance of security workers in fostering a safe campus environment, we believe the “Stand for Security” campaign targets the wrong authorities. As per Harvard University Vice President of Human Resources Marilyn Hausammann's April 27, 2007 letter, we believe that the university has been a responsible partner in its relationship with AlliedBarton and its workers, as demonstrated by Harvard's Wage and Benefits Parity Policy (WBPP). We believe that this policy, which ensures equitable wages, retirement benefits, health care, and paid vacation to contracted employees at Harvard, exemplifies Harvard's faithfulness to fair working conditions on campus. However, as with any contractor arrangement, responsibility for negotiating wages and hiring practices lies with the contractor, AlliedBarton, and not with Harvard University . Moreover, the HRC cautions members of the “Stand for Security” campaign to be aware of the impact of its actions on security workers, their families, and the Boston community at large. If forced to pay workers higher wages, AlliedBarton will have to cut costs in other areas, and may do so through layoffs to current workers, scaling back new hires, and/or reducing the quality of security services provided to Harvard students. The signatories of the “Stand for Security” petition should consider that even well-intentioned goals like higher wages can have detrimental effects in other equally vital areas. The HRC recognizes the importance of activism on campus. However, we recommend that activist energies be channeled towards more productive and economically-sound objectives than those of the “Stand for Security” campaign. Respectfully, The Harvard Republican Club The Harvard Republican Club is the oldest college Republican organization
Ribs, sausage, potato salad, corn bread, sweat tea and water are waiting for you this Friday from 5-7 PM at the Republican BBQ to honor outgoing seniors of the HRC and to celebrate our year's successes. The BBQ will be on the river at the Weeks Footbridge. The event will be catered by Bread and Bones. RSVP to Carolyn Puente at ctpuente@fas.harvard.edu to assure you receive some of the yummy food.
Congratulations to the many HRC members who literally stood behind Senator John McCain during his Presidential Campaign Kick-Off last week in New Hampshire. Special thanks to Steve Johnston, Chair of Harvard Students for McCain, and Michael Miltenburger, Chair of the National Students for McCain group. IV. CAMPAIGN EVENTS Can't wait for '08? Anxious to get your campaign volunteer juices flowing? Want to help add a Republican to the 140 Democrats out of 160 total members of the Massachusetts House of Representatives? Join fellow HRC members at a phone bank for Doug Obey, Republican candidate for State Representative in the special election in the 11th Norfolk District. Mr. Obey is running against a Democrat and a liberal independent who will split the vote, so he has a great chance for a Republican victory in Massachusetts ! Meet at 4:15 THIS THURSDAY at the Harvard Square T-stop to head to the Massachusetts Republican Party Headquarters in Boston ! The phone bank will run from 5-7pm. Email Colin Motley ( cmotley@fas.harvard.edu ) with any questions. We hope to see you there! IV. WRITE FOR REDIVY! Write! Debate! Discuss! RedIvy is a blog for conservative students in the Ivy League. If you are interested in writing please contact Frances Martel, fmartel@fas. V.
