I.    Welcome Back Message from President Jeff Kwong

Welcome back!

It's an exciting year ahead. With a new class on board, the Harvard Republican Club is ready to take on the campus left and work on issues and candidates we care about with one goal ahead -- dare I say it -- 2008.

Our biggest challenge is making sure that you, as an individual member, feels empowered and connected with the club. We have made an effort in the past year to make sure members have an avenue to voice their concerns and to initiate their own projects outside of the Executive Board. We will continue to work hard to make sure our club is one that is driven by our numbers. With that in mind, I hope you will make an effort to invite your friends, uncommitted conservatives, or closeted Republicans into our club. I hope we can have a goal this year -- that everyone now on our roster brings in another member. We can make a difference in increasing out numbers in one year.

Changing gears for a second, now, with over 8 years of one Republican administration, we need to work especially hard to overcome what the Dems think -- that 2008 is a sure thing for them. We know with Hillary on their side, we will beat them just like we smashed her Soviet-Chinese style socialized healthcare plan. We can't lose sight on this. We WILL WIN in 2008!

The GOP has made college activism a top priority for winning our upcoming fall elections and in our presidential elections next year. For folks already active, welcome back and we hope you're rested... And for those we haven't seen, we hope to see you soon and welcome.

Please do not hesitate to contact any one of us on the Exec Board if you need anything or have any concerns. I look forward to hearing from you.

Jeffrey Kwong

II.  Welcome Alee Lockman and Thank You Chris Higgins

It is with much excitement that the Executive Board announces the appointment of Alee Lockman as the HRC's new Membership and Publicity Chair. She has already started working hard and has great ideas for the coming year. Unfortunately, Chris Higgins recently resigned from the position to take a year off to travel/save the world. We wish him the best with his new activities and thank him for his incredible service to the club.

III.   ICE CREAM SOCIAL WITH REAGAN ADVISER!

Join the HRC in welcoming its new freshmen members at an Ice Cream Social with the Chairman of President Reagan's Council of Economic Advisers and Economics Professor, Marty Feldstein. The event will take place on Thursday, September 13 at 7:00 pm in L ittauer Room 15 (Littauer is to the left of the Science Center ). There will be someone to direct new members of the Harvard community to the room. See you then! Questions? Contact Caleb Weatherl at weatherl@fas.harvard.edu

IV.   WANTED: Upperclassmen!

Please help us by volunteering to put up flyers in freshmen dorms for our Ice Cream Social. We would like a big turnout at our first event—and only YOU can make that happen. Please help us to start the year off right. Contact: Secretary Michelle Parilo, Mparilo@fas.harvard.edu if you can help at the beginning of freshmen week.

V.     Activism Plans for the Fall Semester:

Building on last year's successes, the upcoming semester will include events and activities designed to help restore patriotism to Harvard's campus, including another Support Our Troops Donation Drive to benefit the HRC's adopted paratrooper platoon in Iraq, another HRC-sponsored trip to the firing range, and potential collaboration with the MIT College Republicans to build a 9/11 memorial in Cambridge. Also look for activism on economic issues, including a speaker series co-sponsored by the Economic Freedom Initiative and a notable conservative economic mind co-sponsored by the Harvard Salient. To volunteer to help with any of these efforts, contact Vice President for Campaigns and Activism Colin Motley ( cmotley@fas.harvard.edu ).

VI.    Ivy League Republican Conference (ILRC)

This year, the HRC has been chosen to host the annual Ivy League Republican Conference. Join your fellow HRC members and other Republicans from schools like Dartmouth , Brown, Yale, and  Columbia  on Saturday, September 29 from 9am to 5pm in Harvard Hall 104. Conference activities will include discussions with prominent conservative minds like Bill Kristol and swap shop presentations from each school's club outlining their accomplishments and plans for the upcoming semester. Also, a message to all members of the HRC: Remember to join us Friday, September 27 from 10 pm-12 pm for our first HRC party of the year!!! Club members are encouraged to come and welcome our fellow GOPers of the Ivy League to Harvard with good food and drink for all to enjoy! Location to be announced!

To help with planning for the conference, contact Vice President for Campaigns and Activism Colin Motley ( cmotley@fas.harvard.edu ) or Vice President for Social Events Carolyn Puente ( ctpuente@fas.harvard.edu ). Don't miss the conference or the social event to follow!

VII.  Primary Campaigns

The presidential primary campaign season is in full swing! Whether your candidate is a frontrunner, a should-be frontrunner, or not even officially in the race, the HRC can connect you with volunteer opportunities in Massachusetts or New Hampshire . Groups supporting former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Arizona Senator John McCain, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, Senator Sam Brownback, former Senator Fred Thompson, and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich have already been formed, and opportunities are available to form a new group to support your candidate! To get involved, contact Vice President for Campaigns and Activism Colin Motley ( cmotley@fas.harvard.edu ).

VIII.  MACR Update

The Massachusetts Alliance of College Republicans (MACR) has two upcoming exciting fundraising volunteer opportunities with an exciting twist - if you volunteer, you get a ticket to attend a $5000-per-person special guest dinner for free! Join U.S. Rep. Chris Shays (R-CT) on September 7 and Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao on September 18 (also the special guests at each night's dinner) at fundraising events at the Massachusetts Republican Party headquarters in Boston . Volunteers over 21 may also be eligible to receive free drink passes for the dinner events. For more information or to sign up to volunteer, contact MACR Eastern Vice Chair Colin Motley ( eastern@macr.org ).

IX.  Mass GOP Internship Opportunity

The Massachusetts Republican Party is actively seeking College Republican interns for the fall semester.  Interns will gain real world experience while working 20 hours per week in a friendly office environment.  They will be trained by Mass GOP staff and work directly with staff and other interns.  Mass GOP Headquarters is located near North Station in Boston , MA .  Please submit attached email application as soon as possible to Political Director Rob Willington at rwillington@massgop.com .
