IV. Campaign Trip Recap

The HRC would like to thank all the volunteers who braved hurricane-like conditions to campaign on behalf of their favorite Republican candidate this past weekend. The Democrats canceled just because of a few raindrops and 40 mph winds, but we managed to bring out more than 20 Republicans to volunteer for six GOP candidates! Great job everyone, and be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the HRC's next campaign trip to NH .

---

V. Thank you Veterans

This Thursday our active and reserve military colleagues will be in uniform in honor of Veteran's Day, which is November 11th .  If you see any of them, please thank them for their service to our country.

---

VI. Senator Rick Santorum at Harvard

The Harvard Salient presents Sen. Rick Santorum to deliver a lecture entitled : The Gathering Storm of the 21st Century: America's War against Islamic Fascism. Monday, November 5 at 6 p.m. in Harvard Hall 201. Open to the public. For questions, please contact clacaria@fas.harvard.edu

Note: Though the HRC is not cosponsoring this event, we are pleased that a high-ranking former Republican senator is speaking at Harvard. We are hopeful that interested members attend this event, consider Sen. Santorum's views, and decide for themselves what they think. Any implication to the contrary in our previous statement was a mistake.

President

Caleb L. Weatherl '10

It has been an honor to serve as Vice President for Speakers of the Harvard Republican Club. I now come to ask for your vote in the race for President of the HRC. The Club has an esteemed history, and I want to bring it to new heights. Over the past year, I have worked hard to improve the quality of speaker events that the Club has hosted, by bringing in more prominent individuals, like Bill Kristol and Star Parker at Lincoln Day Dinner. I instituted a new tradition of bringing in speakers to liven up meetings. We debated Ned Lamont, heard from Newt Gingrich's Press Secretary, the current U.S. Assistant Secretary of Labor, and a former member of the U.S. Congress at meetings. I have made it my mission to expand the HRC, working tirelessly on many events and bringing in new memberships.

We stand at a critical time for the Republican Club. This will be a year of expanding membership and uniting around the Republican nominee. Important to our goal is to bring in even bigger name speakers, like Newt Gingrich and Michael Steele, than we have in the past. We want to send even more volunteers to New Hampshire. As we celebrate the 120 th year of the Club, I want to lead the celebration right. We have done good things in the past, but we will do great things in the future together.

I would appreciate your support of my candidacy for President of the HRC.

Vice President for Campaigns and Activism

Colin J. Motley '10

For those of you who do not know me, my name is Colin Motley and I am running for Vice President for Campaigns and Activism. This is the same position in which I served the HRC last year, but I hope you will not choose to vote for me on the merits of my experience or past initiatives alone, though with 2 Support Our Troops Drives, a trip to CPAC, an Iraq War counter-protest, a Social Security flyering drive, a thriving Economic Freedom Initiative, and generally activist HRC, I would argue that these past successes prove my competency for this position. In the coming year, I hope to clearly focus HRC's efforts on the primary and general GOP campaign efforts in New Hampshire, while not forgetting our dedication to advancing conservative ideas on campus with more EFI, more counter-protests, more patriotism, and more involvement by ALL members of the club, not just the executive board. I look forward to working with all of you in whatever capacity your vote allows me to serve the HRC, but I hope that I can have your vote for Vice President of Campaigns and Activism.

Vice President for Speakers and Political Discourse

Michelle Parilo '10

As the HRC enters its 120 th year of service, I believe it is important for the club to have a VP of Speakers and Political Discourse who is willing and able to bring some of the most remarkable Republicans to our campus. The current executive board, which I am Secretary of, is already working on bringing Newt Gingrich and Michael Steele next semester. I think these are great additions to our already amazing list of speakers.

I was very happy to assist the current Vice President in planning a speaker's event with two former members of the Executive Branch of Government. I was able to do this because of my former experience at the White House. I still keep in great contact with those I worked with and they are all excited to help out! I also interned with a Member of Parliament, and who knows…maybe we could get a visitor from England!

With that being said, I would really appreciate your confidence in me to serve you to the best of my ability. I think if we work together we can continue to make the HRC a thriving organization people are proud to be members of!

Vice President for Social Events

Alee Lockman '10

I have had extensive experience planning and organizing events and working with funding, and I believe this experience, both within and outside of the HRC, is vital to being VP of Social Events.  If elected, I will efficiently organize events and work to remain within budgets outlined by the exec board.  I am also looking forward to the opportunity to potentially organize an anniversary event-- I believe my experience has prepared me for taking on such an event, and I am looking forward to working with HRC members and the exec board on this event, should I be elected.  If elected, I would also like to work with more HRC members to gain more ideas about what social events members would like to see through out the year.

Secretary

Louis Choi '11

My name is Louis Choi and I am running to be the Secretary of HRC. Why am I a qualified candidate?  I have had extensive experience working with people in high school as I was the student body president for 3 years.  So far I have been involved as one of the assistant treasurers, working to obtain the grants for HRC functions (which have all been fully funded).  I have the organization and people skills that are integral to making an exceptional Secretary.  Also my
extensive knowledge of the computer and background knowledge in web design provide for ease in communication to all whether it is through email, news-lettering, or the HRC website.  I am excited to be a part of HRC and hope to take the next step in furthering HRC as a whole. Thanks for your time, and remember to vote Louis Choi for HRC Secretary.

Tian Feng '11

Hi everyone, I'm Tian Feng, a freshman from Matthews. I'd like to run for HRC secretary this year.

Although I'm a freshman, this is more of a quality for the post of secretary. Being closely related to a new generation of Harvardians allows me the insight to new students' interests, as well as the time to keep track of my duties as secretary. In addition to high school leadership experience in political and academic clubs, I also have web-skills, which I feel is the most crucial aspect of this post. I want to focus more on getting our message out there and am very interested in all of your suggestion! I'm committed to the HRC (I represented the GOP in the international policy debate a few weeks ago), to making improvements in the club, and to the GOP party. Thank you for your time—I'd appreciate your vote =)!

Caitlin High '10

My name is Caitlin High and I'm your girl for HRC Secretary. I'm organized, hard working, and enthusiastic about my work. My goals are to keep all members well informed and to enhance the club website. As Secretary, I would keep excellent records of issues discussed at meetings and attendance. Republicans are a rare find here on campus, so we must keep our conservative cronies up-to-date and united. As Ronald Reagan once said, "Surround yourself with the best people you can find, delegate authority, and don't interfere." Keep Reagan's wise words in mind and remember that a dedicated secretary is vital to the Harvard Republican Club.

Brenda Maldonado '10

As a Republican student in her second year at Harvard, I've come to recognize the HRC as a truly valuable and necessary organization on campus, and this year, I'd like to take a more active role as Secretary.  Though only somewhat involved in the club last year, this year I've already sought out opportunities to lend my efforts and abilities to the Republican cause.  The upcoming election in 2008 is one issue I feel strongly about, and I have been helping to organize and execute student campaign efforts for Senator McCain as chair of Students for McCain.  I've also been helping out our veteran treasurer as Projects Manager and have been responsible for cutting down expenses where possible—a cause I'm sure any Republican would agree is important!  My strong organizational skills make me a worthy candidate for secretary, but more than anything, I believe I have the enthusiasm and dedication to do this office proud.

Rachel Wagley '11

Hello. My name is Rachel Wagley, and I am declaring my candidacy for secretary. Although my new membership covers a time span of a mere few weeks, I have noticed the need for improved organization regarding meeting times and locations. I seek to improve the organization of the calendar, minutes, and e-mail lists. During high school, I served as the president of my high school's Teenage Republicans Club, the youth representative of my neighborhood council, and a Spokane youth campaign representative for Mike McGavick, Cathy McMorris-Rodgers, and Dennis Hessian. In regard to HRC-affiliated activities, I am already writing invitations to potential speakers for the Vice President of Speakers and Political Discourse and involved with the Conservative Women's Caucus and Harvard Salient. My clean room and spotless desk serve as my most integral qualifications, proving that I can conquer all HRC-related organizational and administrative hurdles.

Treasurer

Luis A. Martinez '11

My name is Luis Martinez, and I am running to be your next Treasurer, a position requiring passion and experience. This fall I have campaigned; have attended the Ivy League Republican and MACR Fall Conferences; and am putting together our Alumni Newsletter. Experience-wise, this fall I've served as an Assistant Treasurer, learning what it takes to be an effective fundraiser and allocator of funds. I also serve as the Treasurer for the Heart Chest, a Washington-based non-profit that has this summer raised over $10,000 for people who can't pay the full cost of heart surgeries. As Treasurer, I will come up with new fundraising methods and promise to spend the funds of things that matter the most to you, the members. I look forward to discussing my platform with you. Feel free to e-mail or call me at: lamartin@fas.harvard.edu and (857) 919-1776. Thank you for your support and I wish you the best for a successful November!

Andrew L. Schlafly, Jr. '10

My name is Andrew Schlafly, and I am running for the office of HRC Treasurer. I am a sophomore, and am an active member of the club, being the Harvard Students for Huckabee presidential primary group coordinator. If elected Treasurer, I will make sure that the Harvard Republican Club attains the maximum amount of monetary resources possible by vigorously pursuing grants from the Undergraduate Council and the Institute of Politics. I will also try to seek out donations from HRC alumni, and I will make increasing the number of dues-paying members a priority. Finally, I will work to make sure that the club schedules and holds all possible events, such as campaign trips and campaign group activities, for which we can receive funding, so as not to miss out on grants by simply failing to coordinate activities.

Membership Director

Allison Bode '09

When I was accepted to Harvard almost three years ago, my very conservative grandfather was appalled at the fact that I was going to such a "liberal institution." I personally enjoy the environment at this college, where I get the chance everyday to hear different perspectives on a wide range of issues.  Being a member of the Republican Club adds a balance to this setting as I know that there are others at this school who will make an effort to actively support the GOP.  I have been a member of the General Board since my freshman year and would love to have a more active role within the HRC. I feel that as Membership Director I would have the opportunity to recruit more members, encourage new members to become involved, and help the Executive Board promote the overall stature of the club.

Mark Isaacson '11

My name is Mark Isaacson and I am running for Membership Director.  Even as a freshman, I have already shown a commitment to the Republican Club and want to increase that commitment as an officer of the HRC.  I proudly represented the HRC in a Republican-Democrat debate on Foreign Policy during International Relations week, and I actively work for the Republican cause as an intern with the Mitt Romney presidential campaign.

I feel I have the administrative and managerial skills necessary to effectively carry out the duties of Membership Director.  More importantly, however, I have the desire to increase HRC's presence on campus while bolstering the political participation of those in the HRC.  I look forward to working with the other elected officers to achieve these goals.

As Membership Director, I will be ready for the commitment and challenge of recruiting new members while increasing the participation of current ones.
