This academic year
2009-10 will be a pivotal time as Harvard chooses a new President and Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. We plan to build on the successes of previous years and continue to expand the role of department representatives in the GSC.

Dissertation Completion Grants
Since 2003, under the leadership of Dean Peter Ellison, the GSC has been an advocate in the process of providing dissertation completion grants. Last year, every applicant for funding received a grant.
Graduate Teaching in the New Curriculum
The GSC has played a central role in advocating for teaching opportunities in the new Core. In coordination with the Derek Bok Center, our representative on the university Pedagogy Committee created a survey for graduate student teachers to produce critical data to evaluate resources for student teachers, teaching assignments, and mentoring. Last year the GSC and the undergraduate student council held the first round table on teaching and learning in graduate-lead sections.

Mentoring
Every year, The GSC co-sponsors the Everett Mendelsohn Excellence in Mentoring Awards to recognize exceptional faculty mentors based on nominations by graduate students.
Graduate Women
In coordination with the GSAS Women's Group, the GSC sponsors annual panels.
2004: Gender and Tenure at Harvard with faculty and student speakers;
2005: Discussion with Dean Theda Skocpol on professional development.
Student Parents
The GSC works with the Harvard Student Parent's group to advocate on issues of childcare, funding, insurance and community.

Library Privileges
Thanks to the work of the GSC and the university Library Committee, graduate student borrowing privileges extend for full semester periods.
Course Evaluations
After long-term GSC commitment to this goal, for the first time last year, graduate students were able to evaluate their course on-line.
Student Housing
The GSC housing committee meets with Harvard Real Estate Services to discuss student needs. Harvard is now building graduate housing close to campus. We continue to advocate for affordable pricing.

Dental Insurance
Thanks to the work of the GSC with Harvard University Health Services, dental insurance was available to graduate students last year.
Longwood Area
The GSC continues to advocate for students at Longwood on improving student facilities, campus mobility and quality of life. New initiatives last year
concern improving mental health resources. Last year the GSC worked on
producing a survey of medical area students.
