Current Issues

Tom reports that new modem lines will be in place for off-campus SLIP/PPP access to the Internet beginning in January 1997. The capacity of the modem pools will approximately double as HASCS moves away from the Kerberos server to a simpler system. User support will be available to assist GSAS students in connecting from off-campus. FAS Computer Services is looking for GSAS students to serve as user assistants (UAs) to help serve the computer support needs of graduate students (both within the Residence Halls and outside). If you are interested in helping fellow grad students with computing questions and want to earn extra money, pick up an application at the Science Center or on-line. In response to suggestions from graduate students and others, Harvard libraries are looking into ways that laptop computer users can connect to the campus network. Security issues are being investigated, as well as electrical wiring capacity in Widener.
