GSAS Office of Financial Aid

This is the most important office to most graduate students, regardless of their year at GSAS. Your financial aid counselor, a crucial figure in helping you survive at Harvard, is located here. All aspects of graduate student financial aid are centered in this office.

GSAS Housing Services

An important resource to keep in mind as you are searching for housing. The availability and deadlines of the GSAS Residence Halls are the responsibility of this office. The Housing Exchange is also located in this office.

Harvard International Office (HIO)

HIO serves Harvard's foreign nationals through programs and services for students, scholars, and their families. These services include orientation meetings, arrival booklets, and other information to assist with the adjustment to Harvard and the Boston/Cambridge area; advisement and counseling on immigration regulations, social and cultural differences, financial matters, and personal concerns; referrals to other offices; assistance in locating housing in August and early September; and tax seminars for foreign students and scholars in late February and early March.

Academic records for all students in FAS are maintained in the Office of the Registrar. This office oversees registration, examinations and classroom schedules. Students should come to this office to report any changes in name or address, and to request transcripts of their records or statements certifying their registration at GSAS.

Office of Student Affairs

The Student Affairs Office takes general responsibility for the welfare of graduate students and monitors students' academic status, progress and discipline. It administers the various graduate fellowship competitions and processes, leave and travel applications, intra-Faculty of Arts and Sciences transfer applications, and readmission applications.

Student Employment Office (SEO)

The Student Employment Office is a resource for Harvard students seeking term-time and summer paid employment. It posts hundreds of on- and off-campus job listings in a variety of categories. The office also administers the Federal Work Study Program, several undergraduate research programs, and the Alumni Summer Jobs Program.

The Office of Student Services, directed by Ellen Fox (see GSAS Administrators and Staff) serves as the primary resource for all GSAS students about any academic or personal concerns.

Bureau of Study Counsel (BSC)

The Bureau of Study Counsel offers academic and general counseling to College and GSAS students, including discussion/support groups and workshops on specific issues, such as relationships, procrastination and assertiveness, and dissertation writing.

The Bok Center offers a variety of activities and services to Teaching Fellows and faculty members in an ongoing effort to bolster undergraduate education at Harvard. Some programs it sponsors are: Fall and Winter Teaching Orientations; "micro-teaching," a form of supervised practice teaching; videotaping of classes followed by private conferences; teaching in English for international Teaching Fellows and faculty; topic-based seminars on discussion-leading, writing, and advanced case studies; and the publication of pedagogical videotapes, handbooks and documents.

This is the office where you pay for charges accumulated on your term bill such as tuition, fees, etc. One goes there to pay off a term bill before registration.

Writing Center

Staffed by trained peer tutors who provide individual conferences at no charge, the Writing Center is a place for Harvard undergraduates and GSAS students to get help with all of their writing-whether it be for specific assignments or to improve skills overall. Students discuss ideas, notes, first drafts and even final drafts. You do not have to be finished (or even started) to come for a conference.
