Officers
The Council is composed of representatives from each of the 50+ departments and programs in GSAS. Representatives act as liaisons between their departments and the Council as a whole. The GSC is headed by the Officers, who lead meetings and events, along with a number of delegates to administrative committees throughout the university. The officers are President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer. The 2001-02 Officers are:

Co-Presidents:
Candi Cann (The Study of Religion),
Shaun Rein (Regional Studies: East Asia)
    president@gsc.student.harvard.edu
Vice President:
    Mike Westover (Astronomy)
    vp@gsc.student.harvard.edu
Secretary:
Kim Beauchesne (Romance Languages and Literatures)
    secretary@gsc.student.harvard.edu
Treasurer:
    Zahr Said
    treasurer@gsc.student.harvard.edu

Committees
The GSC elects students to serve on a number of Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) and university-wide committees. These representatives are first charged with expressing the point of view of graduate students in the affairs handled by the committees they attend, and, second, with keeping the Council informed of items considered by the committee. The following committees include student representatives.

Advisory Committee on Shareholders Responsibility (ACSR)
The ACSR is comprised of faculty, students and alumni, and is responsible for making recommendations on how the University should vote its shares on social responsibility resolutions. The ACSR's role is advisory; the Corporation Committee on Shareholder Responsibility (CCSR), a sub-committee of the President and Fellows, is responsible for voting the University's shares and setting investment policy. However, the advice provided by the ACSR is critical to the CCSR. In the past, the ACSR played a major role in developing the University's selective divestment policy with regard to South Africa (which was repealed in 1994, as recommended by the ACSR) and in setting Harvard's policy prohibiting the purchase of stock in tobacco companies. The graduate student representative on the ACSR is drawn from one of the graduate schools on a rotating basis.

Commission on Inquiry
Any student, faculty member, or administrative officer who has a complaint or an inquiry may address it to the office of the Commission of Inquiry in University Hall 1. The Commission makes no rulings, but works for the resolution of issues that come within its competence. The Commission will direct a complaint to the appropriate agency of the FAS. When such an agency seems not to exist, one of the CGE representatives (see below) serves as the GSAS member of the organization. Occasionally, the Commission can be instrumental in the establishment of a new agency for the handling of issues which may be recurrent.

Committee on Graduate Education (CGE)
The Committee on Graduate Education is the standing subcommittee of the Faculty Council responsible for considering all matters of graduate education that might come before the Faculty Council or the full Faculty of Arts and Sciences. The CGE also advises the Dean of the Faculty and the Dean of the Graduate School on matters pertaining to graduate education. Five GSAS students-including the GSC President-serve on the GCE.

Committee on Undergraduate Education (CUE)
Membership in the Committee on Undergraduate Education provides a means for students to give their input on matters of Undergraduate Education at Harvard. The committee examines matters such as the allocation of resources, the standards of academic advising at Harvard, and the requirements for concentrations. The committee consists of undergraduates and college administrators and faculty. A graduate student from the CGE is ordinarily invited as a non-voting guest of the committee in order provide a link between CGE and CUE on matters which may affect graduate students.

FAS Library Committee
This standing committee acts as an advisory to the Librarian of the Harvard College Library (HCL) and the Harvard University Library. This body looks into all aspects of the University Library system, from collections to renovations. Two graduate student representatives serve as active and voting members of the committee.

Graduate Student Health Advisory Committee (GSHAC)
The Graduate Student Health Advisory Committee (GSHAC), part of the Graduate Student Council, is dedicated to helping graduate students preserve their well-being at Harvard. The student dental plan, which became available last year, was the direct result of an initiative taken by GSHAC. At least one member of the committee is part of a Student Health Committee which meets regularly with the Patient Advocate and Director of UHS, to discuss ways of making UHS most helpful to students. GSHAC welcomes suggestions and participation from all graduate students on current health issues.

Harvard University Committee on AIDS
The primary aim of the Harvard University Committee on AIDS is to generate involvement in artistic projects addressing HIV infection and the AIDS pandemic. These projects are focused around World AIDS day and the activities of Harvard-Radcliffe AIDS Awareness Week. The committee will assist and support students in the development of their own projects and help identify sources of funding.

Student-Faculty Judicial Board (SFJB)
The Student-Faculty Judicial Board was established by FAS to deal with alleged offenses concerning the impressibility of student actions or the appropriateness of administrative responses on which there is no clear precedent or consensus in the community. The Judicial Board is charged with hearing cases in which the issues involved have special importance for the University community at large and the principles on which it is based. Two GSAS students are selected by lot to serve on the SFJB.
