GSAS Graduate Student Council

GSC Operating Budget

1997-1998
Notes

Section I -- Changes from 1996-97 Budget

1. Computer Services
Decrease in this expense can be attributed to the one-time purchase of computer equipment.

2. Group Funding
Increase in this expense can be attributed to the increase in the number of GSAS student groups seeking funding from the GSC.

3. Conference/Research Grants
Increase in this expense can be attributed to the increased demand by graduate students for funding to facilitate attendance at conferences and for summer research.

5. Comedy Night
Decrease and elimination of this expense item can be attributed to the relative cost for this event far exceeding revenue estimates.

6. Department Administrator Events
Decrease in this expense can be attributed to a lower cost for the event and for holding only a singly large lunch with department administrators at the beginning of the academic year.

7. Basketball League
Decreease in this expense can be attributed to the GSC's proposal to have the Harvard Graduate Council operate the basketball league (because a major motivation of the league is to facilitate interaction between various Harvard graduate schools), and because expenses have exceeded revenue estimates.

9. Office Assistant
Decrease in this expense can be attributed to a decrease in the hours of the office assistant, and the plan to look for a work-study student to fill this position.

16. Pub Nights
Decrease in this expense can be attributed to increased collaboration and cost-sharing arrangements which the GSC is pursuing with Dudley House. Although the total number of Pub Nights is not expected to decrease, the number which are solely the responsibility of the GSC is expected to be reduced.

17. GSAS Cookout
Decrease in this expense can be attributed to GSAS supporting more of the cost of the cookout.

18. Parents Events
Decrease in this attributed to increased collaboration and cost-sharing arrangements which the GSC is pursuing with Dudley House. One event per semester is planned, as in the 1996-97 academic year.

21. Teaching Fellow Referral Office
This is a new budget item.
