Suicide of First-Year Graduate Student Hailei Ge


From HCSSA Announcement, November 11, 1997:

It is with tremendous sadness that Harvard Chinese Students and Scholars Association (HCSSA) inform you the death of a Chinese student, GE Hailei.

Hailei was a first-year Ph.D. student in Computer Science at Harvard University. He graduated from Beijing University in 1992 and worked for the Stone Company in Beijing for five years before coming to the United States in September 1997.

At 2:15pm on November 5, 1997, Hailei jumped out of a fourth floor window of a building where he often studied. He suffered severe head injuries and chest fractures. He was rushed to the hospital and his death was announced several hours later. On November 7, Harvard Police Department officially announced suicide as the main cause of the death.
