- Committee Reports
- Graduate Student Health
Advisory Committee: It was suggested that graduate students should
not have to pay the UHS fee when they are already charged a facilities fee
and may have coverage under their spouse's insurance. It was brought to
the attention of the group that the cost of prescription medicines beyond
$750 is covered by the current health insurance scheme, and that financial
aid may be available to cover other significant expenses such as travel
vaccinations. The possibility of a graduate student eye-care scheme was
also raised. Please address any additional ideas or concerns to the
Graduate Student Health Advisory Committee representative, Alicia Walker,
at awwalker@fas. Any
messages received will be passed on to UHS, and are valuable in
demonstrating graduate student interest in specific issues.
- FAS Library
Committee: The launch of Hollis II has been further set back
following the poor performance of the proposed system at another
university. The issue of integrating different kinds of holdings into the
Hollis catalog (photographic collections, etc.) is currently under
discussion. Widener carrels are being reassigned - please pick up an
envelope at your current carrel and complete the application. Preference
for carrels on the sixth floor (the last to be disturbed during
renovations) will be given to applicants who are at the dissertation
writing stage. The Lamont tunnel is currently closed, and the Pusey
tunnel is restricted. Input from graduate students into the selection of
books to be sent to the Harvard Depository will be considered - please
contact the librarians for further details.

At the last meeting of the GSC
Executive Committee with the deans of the GSAS it was announced that a
new program for post-doctoral teaching positions is under discussion, and
a letter of support from the GSC for such a project was requested. After
some debate a consensus was reached that more specific information was
required before the GSC could endorse this proposal.

The motion to introduce "waveables" at GSAS Commencement was defeated.
