GSAS Phonathon: November 18.
The
Graduate Student Fund solicits donations from GSAS alumni to help
student funding and provide certain facilities for graduate students.
The second installment of this year's Phonathon will be November
18. The evening will begin at 6:00p.m. with a complimentary dinner,
and calling will be from 7:00p.m. to 9:00p.m. This is an oppurtunity
to meet fellow students as well as alumni of your own department,
and to help replenish the coffers from which you are paid. For more
information, please contact
Kelly Westerhouse or GSC President
Adam Fagen.
GSC Conference Grants, Fall

status of these grants.
NAGPS Regional
Conference at Harvard/MIT/Tufts: Spring 1998. This event,
which graduate students from the entire northeastern United Stated
will be attending, may be taking place largely at Dudley House.
NAGPS National
Conference in Braintree: November 19-22, 1998
The Committee on
Graduate Education (CGE) has set up a special Committee on
Graduate Student Support to reevaluate Harvard's graduate student
funding policy. The committee has asked for student input into the
matter. Interested students should contact GSC President
Adam Fagen.
FAS Library
Committee. Student representative
Mark DeLancey
reported on the Library Committee's plans to renovate Widener.
Though the renovation may not begin implementation for another two
years, current plans include a climate control system, a complete
rewiring, including network sockets in study carrells, and a possible
expansion into the light courtyards. The committee will hold a
special session for student concerns in the near future. Contact
Mark for more information.
Treasurer's Report
Current allocations and budget.
Three allocations were made at the last budget meeting. The
Harvard Chinese Students and Scholars Association was given $500
for a New Year party. The Canadian Club was given $200 dollars for
annual expenses, and the Christian Fellowship was given $522 for
annual operational expenses.
Student group requests allocations.
The deadline for December's allocations is November 19.
Funding request
forms are available either on-line or at the GSC office.
The MBTA has a program in place for students to purchase passes per
semester at a roughly 11% discount of the monthly pass rate. The
GSC is at the moment facilitating the program at Harvard. Order
forms for Spring Semester 1998 passes are available at the GSC
office and must be returned by January 15. The passes will arrive
each month, and will be distributed from the GSC office during its
office hours, which will be arranged to maximize student
convenience.
Athletics Facilities
Results of GSC Athletics
Survey.
The GSC surveyed graduate students during Registration day in order
to gauge opinions of the available athletic facilities on campus. Of
those who returned the survey, more than half supported the opening
of the MAC at a time earlier than the current opening time of
9:00am. Complete results of the survey will soon be available on-
line.
Harvard Graduate Council Presidents Meeting
Adam Fagen represented the GSC at this meeting of all like
organizations in the various Harvard graduate schools (Education,
Kennedy School, Business School, Law School, etc.) One major
concern were the inadequacy of athletic facilities, which, though
used more on a geographical then academic basis, are funded through
departments. Another is the difficulties arising from cross-
registration, be it between Harvard and another university or even
between graduate schools at Harvard.
NAGPS National
Conference Report Our president and vice president reported on
some of the findings of this conference. One of the most valuable
opportunities was the chance to talk to students at other
universities, who have perhaps already solved some of the same
problems we face, and to return the favor to other schoools. A full
report of this conference will be written separately by the
attendees.
Adjourned for Pizza.
Respectfully Submitted,
