Committee Reports
FAS Library
Committee: (1) New carrels in Widener 2-West are now in place.
(2) Increased noise and disturbance is to be expected in Widener in the
weeks ahead. (2) Information sheets on Stacks Renovation are now
available at the entrance to Widener. (4) Issue raised: how are books
being selected to be sent to the Harvard Depository?
Programming Committee: (1) "Health Hints in a Hurry" evening
will now be held once a year. (2) Event for students and their partners
will be moved to after orientation next year, as attendance this year was
low.
Motion carried with caveat that At-Large Representatives may find a
substitute from their discipline to sit on committee this year as sitting
on the committee was not in the original description of their position.
Discussion: GSC co-cponsorship of a new Student Affairs poster for
GSAS. Cost: $150
Motion tabled until next meeting.
New Business
GSC Computer Room: The GSC Computer Room is soon to be
taken over by Harvard Arts
and Sciences Computer Services (HASCS, a.k.a. FAS Computer Services),
and will be open to all Dudley House members. HASCS does not plan to
provide a printer for this facility. After discussing the possibility of
the GSC providing for printing, it was decided to maintain the current free printer in the
Dudley House Library and to request a printer from HASCS at a later date
for the new computer room should demand warrant one.
Graduate Student hours at the QRAC: At present graduate
students have access to the QRAC (Quadrangle Recreational Activities
Center at 66 Garden Street) from 8-12, Mon-Fri. As it appears that the
facility is under-used for much of the day, it was proposed that hours for
graduate students be extended. It was agreed that this proposal should be
put to the deans at the next monthly meeting.
Next meeting of GSC is to be held at Longwood Medical Area
(location TBA)
Issues relating to Teaching Fellows: (1) How are new doctoral
completion grants affecting teaching loads? (2) As it now appears that
some core courses are having difficulty finding enough Teaching Fellows,
it was proposed that a web-based Teaching Fellow referral service be
established. The possibility of funding for this project will be
discussed with the deans at the next monthly meeting.
