WX is a numerically-controlled wax sculpture machine. It takes advantage of the surprising effects produced when hot wax and water combine to create emergent, thin-shelled wax forms.

Exhaustive material research with various types of wax and water mixtures at controlled temperatures and rates of mixing gave our team tremendous insight into the behavioral effects of these materials as they interact. In calibrating these parameters and their related effects, the resulting volume is a highly efficient, thin-walled cellular structure; a frozen animation of the complex fluid dynamics at play when two materials mix.

wave. is a volumetric projection project using Firefly component in Grasshopper. A 3-D model made by approximately 1500 threads is used to receive the projection, forming a visual representation of objects in three dimensions, as opposed to the planar image of two dimension screens. The idea is to project wave lines through a projector onto the model, creating several virtual surfaces that simulate depth through a number of different visual effects are are responsive to the movement tracked by camera. This was a project created in a course titled…

Responsive Mirror

A continuation of the themes explored in the Interfaçade project, Responsive Mirror is an interactive mirror installed in the main entry of Gund Hall at the Harvard Graduate School of Design in the spring of 2012. The mirror is 4 feet by 8 feet, to fit in the relief of a single plywood sheet in the building’s concrete formwork, and distorts in response to human presence. Essentially a dynamic funhouse mirror, the device measures sound and light through a microphone and two embedded photocells and reacts in various ways to sensed changes…

New Tongues is a final project for Quantitative Aesthetics, a class taught by Panagiotis Michalatos at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. I was interested in exploring the augmented body via a prosthetic device. I was intrigued by a pan-cultural, primitive instrument called the tongue drum, also known as a slit drum. One of the earliest known human instruments besides the voice, it is not surprising that it is a percussive instrument. Essentially, a tongue drum is a hollowed out tree trunk with an “H” shape carved into the top, producing two…

Maningrida Interface

Maningrida Interface is an intuitive housing design tool developed for the members of a remote and under-served community in Australia’s Northern Territory. The arrangement and characteristics of rooms are determined by a simple node graph, which builds a simulation of the house it represents in a 3D environment. The iconographic representations of room types align with regional socio-spatial practices. When a user is satisfied with their design, they can save it, which exports the geometry to Digital Project, where the necessary building documents and fabrication data are generated. This process allows for…

Whether we realize it or not, every time we open a piece of design software, we adopt a regime of making narrowly prescribed by the constraints of the program and our limited capacity to interact with it. This condition affects not only our methods of production as designers, but also the conceptual frameworks available to us to address the problem at hand. Interested in exploring the potential for new forms of human interaction with digital design environments, Tim Sullivan and I set out to develop a design environment rooted in playfulness and…

Structural surfaces represent a realm that interweaves formal explorations, structural optimization and innovation in construction. Computation radically advanced the design of structural surfaces; however, how to translate these structural forms into architectural assemblies at the scale of buildings constitutes the most persistent challenge. In this scenario, an approach that ties advanced digital design tools to a specific ad hoc fabrication method can produce a feasible design and construction system, which can contribute to understand and overcome some of the current limitations of structural surfaces.

This custom built CNC machine explores the opportunities manifested through the use of hybrid materials, specifically magnetically-sensitive plastic. A method of design was explored that uses natural forces as a parameter to alter a material that magnifies direct cues from its environment to create form and enhance performative aspects of the material. With this material, a simple digital geometry can interact with a magnetic force to create rich, dynamic, and uncertain material forms. A custom designed CNC machine allows the designer to choreograph the dynamic…

Solstice explores the modular – how one object can stand on its own, but when combined with others of the same kind, becomes larger than the sum of its parts.

A network. The chain effect – we witness this in biological cells, the constellation, the beehive. Solstice is an ode to the changing of the seasons.

An automated installation of three 2ft-wide kinetic flowers which bloomed and retracted at various times. The project by Tara Tan, Ana Garcia Puyol, and Lauren Kim was created as part of Chuck Hoberman’s Transformable Design Class at the…

Our goal was to create a toy similar to the most popular toy constructor systems but particularly unique and innovative regarding its organic design, assembling methods and transformability. The parts that conform the system are made up of alternating pivot joints and ball/socket joints embodied in a single scissor unit. A slight variation aggregated on the ball/socket joint generates two products; both aesthetically similar but enable different connections. These can be interlocked with other units of the same type, creating a three dimensional system. Both the scissor and ball/socket joint that make…

2-Non-Manifold Knot

The search for a family of surfaces that follows the versatile and complex movement of knot curves began with understanding the mathematical functions of the most common of these: the torus knot. A path and a section that describe the surface would indicate the base parameters of the family, leaving frequency, amplitude and asymptotes as the variables that would generate diversity within these parametric functions. Certain rules had to be preserved to ensure that the new equations would therefore follow the principals of knotted curves.

1K Chair + 2D Chair

The 1K and 2D chairs exhibit the relationship of a connection element and assembly of materials. Each chair contains two elements: a wooden seating element and a connector that enables each design to be assembled and disassembled. In the example of the 1K chair, the bronze connection element as a singular object adds value to the assembly of the generic sheet materials it connects. The 2D chair consists of two delta-shaped bent wood elements and a steel connector. In this case the wood elements define the chair while the steel connector blends…
