1995 Harvard Open 1995 Harvard Open

73 players showed up to compete in the 23rd Harvard Open, held on May 13-14 at the Harvard Law School. For the second year in a row, I had the privilege to be the chief organizer of this historic tournament.

The theme of the weekend was without a doubt "upsets," as many strong players suffered disappointing starts and decided to withdraw. Persevering in the 18-player Open Section (including 11 masters, nine of whom were rated over 2300!) was third seed Joe Fang, who scored 3.5-0.5 to win clear first place. Tying for 2nd-4th at 3-1 were Igor Foygel, William Paschall and Foong Yin Wong. Chris von Krogh was the U2300 winner with 2.5-1.5. The U2200 prize was split by experts Daniel Woods and Eugene Perelshteyn and B-player (!) Joe Robillard, at 2-2.

The U2100 section was an unusual case: a five-way tie for first between the top five rated players! Upsets were apparently not the order of the day for Rigel Cappallo, Roger Capallo, Gilberto Kernahan, David Stokkink and Antonio Gellineau, who fought their way to 3-1 scores. Peter Hedge, Amir Zargari and Ken Ho scored 2.5-1.5 to split the U1950 prize.

In the 21-player U1800 section, Robert Cromwell and Charles Riordan were the winners, scoring 3.5-0.5. John Hallahan, Dennis McCoy, Mike Bentley and John Fields tied for third with 3-1.

Last but not least, Joshua Dunton and Ross Viselman won their first three games and then fought to a draw in their last-round battle to share first place with 3.5 points. This was Ross's first tournament, and many Swiss veterans might well envy his 87.5% lifetime winning percentage! Cameron Wood and Joshua Meltzer shared U1350 honors with 3 points apiece.

The tournament was directed by Gus Gosselin, assisted now and then by myself. I don't think I've ever seen an event as smoothly run as this one! Thanks are in order not only to Gus, but also to the players themselves. If there were any disputes, I sure didn't hear them!
