HARVARD CHESS CLUB CONSTITUTION

Article I. Name

 

 

1. The name of this organization shall be the Harvard Chess Club.

 

 

Article II. Purpose

 

 

1. The Harvard Chess Club ("HCC") is organized to promote the

game of chess at Harvard University by appropriate means, including

but not limited to holding regular meetings, the organization of

tournaments, teaching chess in local schools and sending teams to

major intercollegiate and amateur tournaments.

 

 

Article III. Membership

 

 

1. Membership in the HCC is open to all undergraduate and

graduate students in good standing, faculty and affiliates of

Harvard University, regardless of race, creed, color, sex, sexual

orientation or physical disability.

 

 

2. All members shall pay such annual dues to the HCC as may be

designated periodically.

 

 

Article IV. Officers

 

 

1. The officers of the HCC shall be the President and Vice-

President, as well as such other officers as may be designated.

The same person may not hold both offices.

 

 

a. The President shall be the chief executive officer of the

HCC and shall have general supervision of its activities,

programs, and finances.

 

 

b. The Vice-President shall assist the President and assume

his or her duties if, when and as long as the President is

unable to perform such duties.

 

 

Article V. Elections

 

 

1. Officers shall be selected annually by the members of the HCC

during the month of May and shall serve a term of one year,

beginning and ending on the first day of summer recess.

 

 

2. Any undergraduate or graduate member of the HCC may be elected

to office.

 

 

3. In the case that either position becomes vacant, the HCC shall

convene as soon as possible to elect new officers.

 

 

Article VI. Meetings

1. The HCC shall meet on a regular basis to discuss and determine

policy, programs, and other business. The President, or a person

designated by the President, shall schedule and chair the meetings.

 

 

2. A simple majority of the membership shall constitute a quorum.

Business may be discussed, but not voted upon, without a quorum.

In the case that a quorum fails to appear for a meeting, the

President shall schedule another meeting as soon as possible.

 

 

Article VII. Amendments

 

 

1. This constitution may be amended by a two-thirds vote of the

members of the HCC. Any member may propose an amendment.
