Our Mission

The Harvard Chinese Music Ensemble was founded in the fall of 2005. The ensemble has three main goals. One is to provide a venue for students to play both traditional and contemporary music written for Chinese instruments and perform in a group. The second goal is to foster the awareness and appreciation of Chinese traditional music among the Harvard community through music workshops and instrumental demonstrations by the group's members at Harvard events, such as House Coffeehouses, Cultural Rhythms, and Arts First. As its members cannot be expected to be experts in Chinese music, the third goal of the ensemble would be to further enhance the Harvard Chinese music experience by inviting local professionals and organizing workshops around them.

We also plan to hold a small concert during the spring semester to perform a selection of pieces that the ensemble has rehearsed over the course of the school year. The concert would be free to all Harvard students and faculty to encourage people to attend, and may be open to the public.

Membership in the Harvard Chinese Music Ensemble is open to all interested Harvard College students, regardless of race, ethnicity, creed, color, sex, sexual orientation, or physical disability. Neither would membership be limited to students who study Chinese music or play Chinese instruments. Interested members may participate either by playing in the ensemble or helping organize ensemble events. So if you are interested in traditional Chinese music, please join us!
