Third Rider Program

Volunteer on an Ambulance.

Emergency Services Volunteers have the option of riding with a Professional Ambulance unit on a weekly basis. Professional Ambulance is a private firm that provides both Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) service to the city of Cambridge. Units respond to many of Cambridge's 911 emergency and transport calls. Established in 1974 by Larry S. Stone, it has been a fixture in the community ever since. Often one can see a unit standing by in Harvard Square or poised else where around the city.

Emergency Services Instructors teach Harvard Students professional level CPR. After attending a full day training session, students will be certified as BLS Heathcare Provider through the American Heart Association. Upon completion of the course volunteers will have the option of volunteering to assist an ambulance crew on a biweekly basis. Training sessions are held at least once a semester on a Saturday at the Professional Ambualnce base in Alewife. For information email hems@hcs.harvrd.edu.

CPR Training

Emergency Services Instructors teach Harvard Students and PBH Volunteers CPR. The Harvard Emergency Services (HEMS) is a student-run PBHA program offering CPR instruction to all members of the Harvard and Cambridge communities. All instructors are certified to teach by the American Heart Association, the largest CPR accreditation organization in the world.

Classes are conducted in small groups, with individual attention provided to each student. Participants make extensive use of the latest in CPR simulation mannequins, developing the practical skills that they will need most when medical emergencies arise.

Basic HeartSaver™ classes teach the warning signs of heart attack and stroke, adult CPR, and first-aid for choking. All class participants receive a student CPR handbook and a CPR participation card. Each HeartSaver™ class lasts about 3 hours (depending upon enrollment), and costs $15. Members of PBHA programs that require CPR certification can attend classes for free! Check with your Phillips-Brooks House program directors for details. For more information, or to register for the next class, e-mail: hems@hcs.harvard.edu.
