The Harvard Initiative for Peace and Justice (HIPJ) is a group
of people working to provoke dialogue, publicize information
about war and peace in today's world, and do our part to stop
the ill-conceived wars that now surround us.
We welcome anyone and everyone, particularly people who live
or work at or near Harvard. To get involved, please come
to our next meeting or contact
one of our point people.
We hold protests on and near the Harvard campus, host speakers,
and work to increase visible support on campus for peaceful conflict
resolution and avoidance of war. We are registered as a
Harvard undergraduate student group, but all are welcome to
join in our work.
News and History
- On December 10, 2002, HIPJ held an Anti-War Die-In
in Harvard Yard to show solidarity with those civilians
who may soon be killed by a US-led preemptive war on Iraq.
Over one hundred supporters came and thirty more lay on the
ground for an hour in a graphic reenactment of the horrors
our country is about to perpetrate. The protest was timed
as part of International Human Rights Day.
- On
October 7, 2002, the National Student Day of Action
included massive rallies around the country, including at
Harvard, where eight speakers and over 300 protesters gathered
to send the message to Congress not to approve use of force
in Iraq.
- HIPJ was founded by a small group of students on
the evening of September 11, 2001, with the hope of
showing support for peaceful resolution of conflict even
in the face of horrific violence.
