AAA strives to unite Asian American students at Harvard and raise greater
awareness of Asian American issues through social, cultural, and political
events. We aim to:
o Foster a community within Harvard dedicated to embracing our shared
identity and promoting greater awareness of Asian American issues and
perspectives;
o Provide a forum for Asian Americans at Harvard to voice their opinions
and comfortably explore their culture, identity, and individuality;
o Address political, economic, and social issues affecting our communities
at Harvard as well as at the local and national levels;
o Celebrate achievements of Asian Americans, including those in the arts,
entertainment, politics, business, and science academia;
o Develop long-lasting partnerships between students, alumni, community
activists,
and scholars;
o Inspire participants to contemplate their roles and responsibilities
in forging the future of Asian America.
AAA is also comprised on committees that allow general members to take
part in the planning and execution of our events:
The EDUCATIONAL/POLITICAL ("ed-pol") COMMITEE of AAA seeks to action among
the Asian American student body, through organizing events that raise the
political consciousness of our peers on campus. We host informational
panels, roundtable discussions, film screenings, and speaker
presentations. Ed-pol strives to promote responsible dialogue on a variety
of contemporary APA issues, while acknowledging that Asian Americans subscribe to a diverse range of political beliefs. Our belief is that
educational and political issues lie at the heart of AAA's history, and we
are committed to continue the activist legacy of our predecessors. Past
topics have included: self-segregation, affirmative action, political
activism, corporate discrimination, and interracial dating.
The CULTURAL COMMITTEE strives to showcase the diversity of Asian American culture. Each fall, the committee organizes two signature events:
1)
Feast- A Cultural Extravaganza, which recognizes and celebrates the different cultures represented by the Asian ethnic organizations on campus, and 2) Asian American Arts Concert, which aims to showcase Asian
American professional artists and bring about greater awareness of Asian
American talent. In the spring, the committee organizes the Asian American
Association Coffeehouse, an event that celebrates the visual, musical and
dramatic talents of Asian American artists on campus. The cultural
committee also highlights trends in the evolving Asian American culture
with workshops such as The Culinary Revolution, which focuses on
contributions Asian American chefs have made to contemporary cuisine.
The SOCIAL COMMITTEE is tasked with building Asian American community on
campus through various social events, mixers, etc. Each fall, the Social
Committee coordinates with four other Boston Area Schools (MIT, Tufts, BC, Wellesley) to through an intercollegiate formal called Utopia. Another
signature social event is the annual Screw Your Roommate Dance, which features electronic blind dates. Recently, social has been reaching outward not only to Harvard Asians, but to the entire Boston Asian collegiate community in an effort to help people bond, share, and make
friends. The strength of AAA has always been grounded in our community and
Social Committee works hard to maintain that strength in community.
The OUTREACH COMMITTEE strives to expand the AAA mission beyond the
undergraduate campus, creating programs that reach out to AAA alumni,
graduate students and pre-frosh. ?In 2003, the Vice President and Outreach
Commitee launched the first HarvardAsian-American Mentorship Program,
pairing undergraduates from the College with graduate students from the
Harvard Business, Law, Public Health and Medical Schools every fall.
Outreach also organizes the Pan-Asian Pre-frosh Reception, uniting Asian
and Asian-American organizations on campus to introduce prospective
students to the vibrant Asian community at Harvard. The
Outreach Committee also coordinates with alumni, most recently organizing
the Asian and Asian-American Reunion Dinner in Spring 2006 and an eventual
larger Reunion Weekend.
