HRCM:
An Introduction

The Harvard-Radcliffe Collegium Musicum, a student-run organization at Harvard College, is a select ensemble of musicians and students dedicated to the highest caliber of both a cappella and choral-orchestral masterworks performances. Spanning nearly five octaves and six centuries, our diverse repertoire has delighted audiences around the world, most recently in Australia, where the Collegium spent its 35th anniversary tour.

Singers in HRCM are also given the opportunity to perform with our two subset ensembles, the Chamber Singers, a smaller ensemble that specializes in Renaissance works, and the Collegium Underground, focusing on a cappella classics.

The Harvard-Radcliffe Collegium Musicum is honored to join the Harvard Glee Club and the Radcliffe Choral Society in an exciting and historic performance of Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms. The Symphony of Psalms was written to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and its American Premiere was sung by HGC and RCS is 1930. Our April 11th performance of the piece is part of a concert put on by the Harvard Glee Club to celebrate their 150th Anniversary. Not sung on the Harvard campus since 1998, the Mass in B Minor (BWV 232, 1749) represents one of the highest points of Western musical achievement and is the finest example of any polyphonic mass produced by Bach, the master of the Baroque. Though Bach himself never heard the work performed in its entirety, modern scholars attest that he no doubt wished the Mass to be regarded as a monument to his skill. The members of the Collegium are thrilled to be perfecting such a bold and glorious piece, and are especially excited to be joined by musical guests of the highest caliber.

In addition to this exciting performance by the Collegium and the wonderful musicians who will be joining them, this occasion will also mark the celebration of the dedication and energetic passion of the man behind choral music at Harvard: Dr. Jameson Marvin. This season is Dr. Marvin's 30th here at Harvard, where his incredible musical drive has led not one but three choirs to the pinnacle of ensemble performance as recognized both here in the Boston area and in the national choral community, where concert-goers and musical leaders alike have had the opportunity to experience first-hand the superb music produced by such devotion.
