Subject: New England Taiwan ROC Academic Forum
Date: Saturday, April 20, 2002
Time: 2:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m.
Location: Harvard University Science Center Room D (a few minutes walk from
Harvard Station on the Red Line)

Dear Taiwan ROC Scholars and Students:

We are pleased to announce the three speakers for the April Academic Forum.
Admission is free and all are welcome to attend. Refreshments will be
provided.

1. Professor Jiann-ou Liu
Topic: Cross-Strait Media Exchanges

Professor Liu received a Masters in Education from United States
International University and is currently a professor and the Director of the
Journalism Department and the Institute of Journalism at Fu Hsing Kang
College. Professor Liu also teaches at Chung Yuang University and is Chief
of the Fu Hsing Kang Weekly and a Consultant to the Fu Hsing Broadcasting
Station. She was chosen as a judge for both the Golden Bell Award for Radio
and Television and the Taipei City Press Association Reporting Award. In
addition, Professor Liu has also served as a member of the Ministry of
Education Committee on Mass Communication curriculum design and as Deputy
Chief Editor of the Fu Hsing Kang Journal and Chief of Chang Kung
Broadcasting Station. She has published numerous books on communication and
is a highly respected expert in her field.

Professor Liu will speak on news exchanges across the Taiwan Strait and the
colliding ideologies of both sides. Although the media flow between Taiwan
and the Mainland is not yet free, it has never been interrupted completely
and the existing cultural interaction serves as the most prominent form of
exchange and seems to offer the greatest hope for improving hostile
relations. Professor Liu's speech will focus on the different models of
political communication representing the official media, the content of the
news exchanges and the development of the Internet on both sides of the
Strait. She will also explore the core issues currently shaping the media on
both sides and look at the prospects of future media exchange.

2. Dr. Frederick Chao-Chun Lin, S.J.D.
Topic: The Difficulties and Frustrations of Appropriating Foreign Human
Rights Jurisprudence in Taiwan, R.O.C.

Dr. Lin is currently a visiting scholar at Harvard Law School and received
his L.L.M. and S.J.D. from Northwestern University School of Law. He also
received his doctorate and L.L.M. from Taiwan's National Chengchi University
and his L.L.B. from National Taiwan University. Dr. Lin is a Chiang
Ching-Kuo Foundation Scholar and recipient of the Best Annual Masters Thesis
award from the Chinese Constitutional Law Society. He is a practicing lawyer
and has conducted extensive research projects on behalf of the Taiwan
Provincial Government and the Ministry of Education.

Dr. Lin will speak on Taiwan's progress in the development of constitutional
jurisprudence within the past year as well as the challenges remaining in
regards to the appropriation of foreign constitutional jurisprudence. The
speech will analyze the challenges facing the Grand Justices in their
attempts to transplant foreign constitutional law to Taiwan in order to
refute the relentless criticism of constitutional scholars in Taiwan and
encourage a more balanced critique of Grand Justice interpretations.

3. Dr. Chu-Yao Chen
Topic: The Common Diseases in Otolaryngology

Dr. Chen is a graduate of Chang Gung University Medical College on Taiwan,
ROC. She was a chief resident and attending physician at Chang Gung Memorial
Hospital Department of Otolaryngology and is currently a research fellow in
the Department of Otolaryngology at Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts Eye
and Ear Infirmary.

Dr. Chen's speech will focus on common ear, nose and throat diseases
including acute otitis media, middle ear effusion, Eustachian tube
dysfunction, Meniere's disease (vertigo, tinnitus, hearing impairment),
Little's area erosion (nasal bleeding), allergic rhinitis, paranasal
sinusitis, vocal nodules (husky voice), etc. Her speech will be accompanied
by color photographs and Dr. Chen will elaborate on the causes, symptoms,
initial management and prevention of these diseases.
