WHY ENDOW?

Our primary reason for endowing the shelter is to close the gap between our state funding and our actual costs each year. As of now, we have annual expenses of $51,500 per year and receive only $34,000 annually from the state and city. We currently scramble to fill the gap each year through a combination of grants from foundations and individual donations. Endowing HSHS will ensure our financial base and allow us to expand our vital services.

Expanding Our Services

* Assisting people transitioning into housing with a "Going Home" grant of several hundred dollars
* Subsidizing wages of guests on the Work Contract Program to transition into housing
* Utilizing professionals in the fields of mental health, law, and medicine
* Consulting with a nutritionist and purchasing healthier food to supplement our donations to improve the nutritional content of our meals
* Expanding our advocacy and outreach programs in the Harvard, Cambridge, and Boston communities and raising homelessness awareness through conferences, pamphlets, and databases.

Other ways to Donate

We rely on the generosity of others for day-to-day maintenance as well as long-term support. If you are in doubt as to whether or not we are in need of your specific donations, please feel free to call and ask--more often than not we will find a use for it.

Clothing: We maintain a clothing closet for both men and women, as well as a closet of socks and underwear. New clothing, socks and underwear, and shoes as well as used clothing and shoes are always welcome. Large T-shirts are especially needed.

Blankets: In addition to the need for blankets within the shelter, HSHS also routinely gives out blankets upon request at the door.

Food: Any groceries, from cereal to canned food to leftovers from functions, are always welcome.

For in-kind donations, please email us.
We thank you for your generous support!
