Quick Reference

This is intended as a very quick introduction to editing and creating pages on the handbook.

Creating a Page

To create a page, log into your account (or if you don't have an account, create one). Once you're logged in, a new menu on the left will appear underneath the main menu. Click create content, and then click Wiki page.

You'll then be able to give your new page a title, assign a category (if appropriate), and start writing. You can use the Mediawiki syntax to create your page - it's identical to editing a page on Wikipedia. We're working on adding a WYSIWYG editor. See http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Cheatsheet for help. When you're done, you can preview your page and then publish it.

Make sure you add a link to your new page in an existing page, or otherwise nobody will know how to get to it! Contact nshearer@fas to get your page added to the menu, if it's relevant or important enough.

Editing a Page

Navigate to the page you want to edit, and click the edit tab at the top. Editing the page is exactly the same process as creating a page, but make you add a log message in the box provided to summarise the changes you have made.

Attaching a File

You may attach a file to your new or edited page - for example, a VectorWorks plot or PDF drawing. Simply click file attachments at the bottom of the page (above the publish and preview buttons).

Attaching an Image

You can attach and upload an image in one of two ways. The simplest is as follows:
  1. Click the picture icon immediately below the main editing area (it looks like a photo with a green plus sign to the left).
  2. In the window that pops up, click the upload a new image button (this may take a while to load).
  3. Give your image a title, and use the body section to describe it. Make sure you assign a category.
  4. You can then navigate to the image you've just uploaded, click it, and it will be automatically inserted into your page.
