Harvard Pre-Collegiate Economics Challenge (HPEC)
The Harvard Undergraduate Economics Association is pleased to announce our Seventh Annual Harvard Pre-Collegiate Economics Challenge (HPEC), a competition for high school students passionate about economics. The Harvard Undergraduate Economics Association (HUEA) promotes awareness about research and opportunities in economics for students interested in learning about the field or pursuing economics-related careers. HPEC is the flagship event of our outreach branch, which seeks to foster economics education.
HPEC will take place this year on Saturday, March 31, 2012 from 9am-5pm at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA. The competition tests economics knowledge at the Advanced Placement Microeconomics and Macroeconomics levels, as well as knowledge of current economic issues, through a series of individual and team rounds. Teams consist of four students each, and schools may bring up to two teams. Up to thirty-two teams will be able to participate. In the past, students have found this competition to be fun and helpful preparation for the AP Economics exams.
For the past few years, we have been honored to have Professor N. Gregory Mankiw, author of the widely-used textbook Principles of Economics, as our special guest speaker. Professor Mankiw has spoken to students and answered their questions. We are excited that Professor Mankiw has agreed to return to HPEC this year.
For your information, a few sample questions are attached, as well as a picture of the 2011 competition winner, Phillips Academy Andover, with Professor Mankiw and HUEA board members.
