The Runaround
Upon solving the meta, teams were instructed to gather at the steps of Lamont Library. Once there, they received the following instructions:
- You see a right
triangle. Go along the hypotenuse, and continue in a straight
line until you reach steps.
- Assistance?
You don't think you need it -- but look: it's staring at
something in the bush on the other side. Pick up a machine part
and ingredient.
- You turn around,
and go all the way back down the hypotenuse. You refuse the offer
of more assistance on the way out.
- The current carries
you downstream -- it starts to turn, and flow every which way, but
you cross and continue in a straight line until you meet a spiral.
You follow the spiral to its end.
- An angle on a nearby
boulder points you to an entrance on the far bank.
- You daren't enter,
but look instead to the small caves nearby. In the farthest, you
find another machine part and ingredient!
- You continue a short
way, then go down. You see a sign across the street that has dark
tape covering some of the words. You can't read all of it, but
today isn't a second Thursday, so you park your car and go through
a nearby entrance.
- You look around.
1898 or 1902? Let's try 1898 -- it forbids some, but you may
enter, possibly with the help of an elf.
- Quick! Find
a way down. Do not be diverted. Ah! That door claims to
be the archer's driving force! In the white cupboard you find
another ingredient and machine part.
- Well, there's
only one way to continue now, and it takes you back up. You see
the Truth and fear it -- get out!
- Oops, you forgot
to pay parking money! Put a quarter in each side. You see
a four-way intersection where there is only one way to jaywalk.
Jaywalk it, and continue in the same direction until you see a door.
- Alas! You
are told that this is the wrong entrance. You trust your information,
but the way it leads to is more forbidding. But all is not lost -- at the foot of the taller of two trees, you find another ingredient
and machine part.
- Leave and continue
downstream until you find a bench that is not behind a fence!
- Sit in the center
of a bench that doesn't face another bench. Find an ingredient
and machine part under the seat.
- Go to the president
and turn left. You approach two pedestrians without feet.
Despite the arrows, they are heading in the same direction -- you go
the other way.
- You see an awful
paint job, and something handicapped-accessible. You're not
handicapped, so go to the right of it. Unfortunately, it leads
to a dead end, but you find another ingredient and machine part.
- Looks like you'll
have to take the handicapped route after all. You see 1-127; go
to 281, then 148.
- That sign's about
as helpful as the Cheshire cat -- go the only other obvious direction.
- Free at last! -- only not yet. Pass a bench. On the left you see a... thing,
and find an ingredient and machine part there.
- Put the... thing
to your back and pass under the cross. Walk on until you are at
last free. Then follow the yellow line by the brick road, but
don't go towards where you've already been, and persevere even if
the line breaks. You see another bad paint job, then a good paint
job.
- At the end of the
line, you'll see a sign. Without turning to read it, disobey
it -- the way is clear ahead. You walk until you see an automobile
speaker (?). Obey the next sign. Above you, a machine part
and ingredient could be crucified (without a cross), but instead they're
just in danger of being stepped on. Rescue them.
- MAKL NO MOBL.
Walk through the bushes. Behind the trees, you see the glorious
tower in the distance.
- As you approach
the main entrance, you pass between two small shield-bearers.
Take the zigzag path to the fallout shelter. Don't go in, but
pick up the machine part and ingredient left behind the gutter.
- Enter the main
gates -- when back out under the stars, take a drink from the nearest
goblet. You'll find a machine part there, and instructions.
The instructions in the goblet directed teams to Eliot H-44, where they saw a blank copy of the meta art. During the runaround teams had collected various (more sensible) cookie ingredients and operations; they now attached them to the meta diagram as seemed fit. When they were finished, they were given these instructions:
- Go to the main entrance
of Lowell House. Pretend you're handicapped: no stairs allowed,
so go down one ramp and up another. Note your location -- it's
not written on the door, but oh well.
- Go down. Follow
the adjacent yellow and green pipes. You pass a dark room.
You see an exit ahead, but take your only other option instead.
As you follow the yellow piping for some distance, you will see blue
and green wires tied with twine, a pattern that is one quarter black,
and a gamma. Even after the piping stops, keep on going straight
ahead: don't turn unless you have to. You will pass old water,
a nasty shock, two illumination control panels, a shelf, Dave Yau, an
unofficial E, and a gigantic chessboard. You should very shortly
come to a door with three locks. (If you find yourself descending,
you've gone way too far.) Note your location.
- The Lowell bells
are something borrowed -- turn around and go through something blue.
Now, get out! Turn right and, making sure not to go under anything,
pass by 40 windows and then a funny window. Pass by 10 more windows,
and go in the nearest swipe card entrance. Note your location.
- Obey the first sign
on your left. Go to the rightmost door that you can see before
you step down. Note your location.
- Go downstairs, where
you follow the cold water and go against the hot. Stop at the
third fire alarm on your right. You see stairs: go up them, and
look behind a paper sign.
Behind the sign, teams found a note reading: Go back down the stairs.
Note your location. You know where to go now. Go up as high
as you can -- you may need a chair for this. The noted locations were entryways C, O, O, K, and I; the "coin" (a package of Keebler cookies) was located above a trap door in the ceiling at the top of entryway E. (Had any team assembled the machine incorrectly in Eliot, they would instead have found asparagus. Fortunately, none did.)
