PRIVATE GIFTS -THE SHORYUHAI TROPHIES ::Through the generosity of the former Prime Minister of Japan, Mr. Ryutaro Hashimoto, two trophies were donated in 1997 to strengthen the intercollegiate kendo tournament already held at Harvard.
Mr. Hashimoto christened the trophies and the tournament "Shoryuhai", or "rising dragon", according to his opinion of the Harvard-Radcliffe Kendo Club and of North American collegiate kendo at the time. These trophies serve as the hallmark of the growing collegiate kendo community and are the most coveted prizes in collegiate team competition today. Of the two trophies, one is on permanent display on the Harvard campus in Cambridge, while the other is a traveling trophy that is displayed by each year's winning team.
