About Otello

In March 2009, the Lowell House Opera presents Giuseppe Verdi’s masterpiece Otello. Based on Shakespeare’s Othello, the tragic opera depicts the jealousy of the Moor Otello, Venetian general and governor of Cyprus, for his wife Desdemona, a jealousy elicited by the scheming of his nihilistic ensign Iago. One of Verdi’s last operas, Otello is written in an advanced style which brings the lyricism and immediacy of his earlier works to a more modern dramatic structure with brilliant and beautiful harmonic colors. The conflict between faith and scientific proof, the clash of religious world views, the perils of miscommunication and misunderstanding, the struggle of women to effect change in a world dominated by men - these themes, ever important in today’s world, are brought into intense focus by the imaginative libretto by Arrigo Boito with revision by Verdi and by the power of Verdi’s score.
