TOSCA: Auditions for Principal Roles

The Lowell House Opera seeks singers for PRINCIPAL ROLES for its February–March 2010 production of Puccini’s Tosca, fully costumed and staged, sung in Italian with projected supertitles, with full orchestra. This is an all-volunteer production. Auditions are open to all singers. Though most singers live in the Boston area, singers based in New York City, Chicago, San Francisco, Europe, and other areas have participated in the past several years. AUDITIONS FOR PRINCIPAL ROLES:

  • We have completed our preliminary auditions. We are still considering singers for selected principal roles on an application basis; please complete the web form below if you are interested.
  • Candidates invited to audition for principal roles should bring a 8“ x 10” headshot and two copies of a current résumé and should be prepared to sing from 2 opera arias. One aria should be sung in Italian. It may be an aria from Tosca but need not be.
  • The audition will be held at Lowell House, 10 Holyoke Place, Cambridge, MA 02138. A map is posted here: http://www.hcs.harvard.edu/lho/contact.html. Singers should arrive 15 minutes prior to their audition time to complete forms. Lowell House Opera staff will be stationed at the main entrance. There will be a warmup room at the audition location. An accompanist will be on site but you may bring your own accompanist if you wish. There is limited street parking available near Lowell House.
  • Singers living outside the greater Boston area may send a high-quality DVD video recording in NTSC format or link to a high-quality video on a website, though audition in person is preferred. You should also send a copy of a current résumé. All materials must be clearly labeled with your name, telephone number, and email address. PERFORMANCES: February 24, 26, 27, 28; March 3, 5, 6, 2010, all evening performances. Some principal roles will be doubly cast. Performers are expected to be available for ALL performances.

REHEARSALS FOR PRINCIPAL ROLES: Music and staging rehearsals will take place between January 15, 2010 and February 23, 2010. Additional musical rehearsals will be scheduled between November 2009 and January 2010 when feasible. Singers in most principal roles are expected to be in residence in the Boston area between January 15, 2010 and March 7, 2010, inclusive. Rehearsals will take place weekday evenings and weekends. Evening rehearsals and performances may last as late as midnight. Except in unusual circumstances, there will be no Lowell House Opera rehearsals prior to 6 pm Monday to Friday or prior to noon on Sunday, as many cast members are working or studying during those times. NOTE: The chorus has a different rehearsal schedule; see this page for details.

TECH: ALL cast are required to participate in load-in and strike, and all cast must assist with moving tables and chairs before and after each dress rehearsal and performance. For most people this will involve lifting moderately heavy loads. Those who are physically unable to assist with lifting activities may assist instead with costumes, props, etc., with the permission of the producer.

HOUSING AND TRANSPORTATION: There is no fee for participation. The Lowell House Opera does not have any budget for stipends, housing, or transportation, and cast members are expected to provide their own housing and transportation.

SCORES: All singers are expected to provide their own scores. We will be using the Ricordi score edited by Parker, published in 1995. Ricordi #RCP135431/05 (old product code is HL.50482552). ISBN 0634072609. 8x10.75 inches. Italian/English, translated by Parker. The opera will be sung in Italian.
