Root returns to Cambridge after spending parts of the last two years in
Washington, DC and San Francisco. From September 1993 until January 1995,
he worked for the Xerox Corporation in the campany's Washington Metro
Office. For the last six months, he has been an assistant coach for the
Walnut Creek (CA) Aqua Bears, coaching both age group and senior swim
teams.
A four-year letterwinner and tri-captain for the 1992-93 Harvard men's swim team, Root was an outstanding distance freestyler who remains a school record-holder in the 800 freestyle relay. The relay unit swam its record time of 6:34.99 while placing second at the 1992 Eastern Championships. Root, who graduated with a degree in Economics, was an All-Ivy and All-East selection throughout his Harvard career and was an Olympic Trials Qualifier in 1992.
"As was the case when he swam here, Stephen will bring a lot of enthusiasm and excitement to our program," said head coach Mike Chasson, who is entering his fifth season at the helm and who coached Root for two years. "I am certain he will do an outstanding job in both recruiting and coaching on the deck."
Root is a 1989 graduate of Deerfield Academy, where was a two-time All-American in swimming. He also lettered in water polo in high school, and was captain and MVP of both teams as a senior. Also in 1989, Root was a National Junior Olympic Champion.
