PROGRAM DETAILS

Summer MIHNUET is similar to our term-time program in its mission of musical service, but significantly different in terms of structure and time commitment. Performers with Summer MIHNUET continue the group's mission into the summer months by coordinating and performing at roughly 65 performances occurring over nine weeks (June 15 - August 15) corresponding with the Summer Housing period at Harvard. Performances take place at MIHNUET's regular sites as well as additional, more distant sites.

Those accepted to the program will be provided with free housing at Harvard in return for committing 30 hours per week for 9 weeks to service in area hospitals and nursing homes. Performances generally take place on the weekends and early weekday evenings. Volunteer hours will be logged on timesheets to be filed with the Public Service Network.

Two types of volunteers are associated with MIHNUET's summer program:

Resident Performers receive housing through the program and are bound to a time commitment as outlined above. They must be accepted to the program via an application and interview process. This year, six Resident Performers will constitute the program, with one of them serving as the Program Director. Resident Performers who are eligible for Federal Work-Study funding have the opportunity to continue receiving this funding through their volunteer hours with Summer MIHNUET; more information on this opportunity can be found below.

Guest Performers do not receive housing and as such are not committed to any fixed amount of service per week. Instead, they attend as many or as few performances as they wish, and do not need to submit an application or undergo an interview. MIHNUET will cover the cost of transportation for Guest Performers. If you wish to be a Guest Performer with Summer MIHNUET, please contact the Summer Director after March 18.

In addition to the service commitment of the Resident Performers, the Summer MIHNUET Director will also be responsible for running a pre-summer orientation, coordinating all of the season's performances and rehearsals, presiding over staff meetings, allocating funding, maintaining correspondence with the MIHNUET Presidents, and preparing a comprehensive evaluation of the program upon its completion. This position is a significant one and will require an additional commitment of at least 10 hours per week. Please do not apply for this position unless involvement with Summer MIHNUET will be your primary occupation this summer!

SUMMER WORK-STUDY FUNDING

As mentioned above, Summer MIHNUET volunteers may be eligible for Federal Work-Study funding for their service.

The guidelines for this funding can be found at:
http://www.seo.harvard.edu/federal/summer.html

The funding application is at:
http://www.seo.harvard.edu/includes/federal/summerapp2.htm

As the SEO website indicates, summer Federal Work-Study applications will be accepted on a rolling basis beginning March 10. Please note that funds are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis due to the limited amount of funding available.

If you are curious about this procedure or are unsure of your eligibility, please stop by the Student Employment Office (located at 86 Brattle Street). There, you can pick up the necessary paperwork. Further paperwork will also need to be completed at Phillips Brooks House.
