Spring 2012 Concerto Competition

Eligibility

MSO's annual concerto competition, historically open only to first-year undergraduates at Harvard University, from 2008 and onwards will be open to all Harvard undergraduates.

Both instrumental and vocal concertos are welcome. In case of double concertos, both soloists must be undergraduates at Harvard. The winner will be invited to perform the concerto in its entirety with the MSO at its Spring Concert to be held on Saturday, April the 7th, 2012 in Paine Hall.

Guidelines

Competition auditions will take place in the Music Building (practice room TBD) on Sunday, March the 3rd and Wednesday, March the 7th. Please email MSO President Eric Chen (ericchen@fas.harvard.edu) to sign up and schedule a time.

Candidates must perform excerpts from all movements of the concerto and plan appropriate cuts so that the audition lasts no more than 18 minutes.

Candidates must provide at least one copy of a score to the judges (full scores preferred, but piano reductions will be accepted).

Candidates must provide their own accompanist if so desired, although no accompanist is necessary.

Please keep in mind that the winner may be asked to perform another concerto if the original concerto is not appropriate for MSO due to scoring, programming, or other requirements.

To sign up, please email MSO President Eric Chen (ericchen@fas.harvard.edu) with the subject “Concerto Competition Appointment” and the following information:  your name, instrument, composer and title of your concerto, and your availability.
