Our IIB site works with refugees and other immigrants from a variety of countries. IIB offers five levels of English instruction in two tracks tailored to the needs of those educated in other languages and those who had only limited educational opportunities in their native countries. Additionally, IIB provides a dynamic and friendly environment that offers terrific opportunities to teach large or small groups at different levels. Volunteers are also needed in the computer lab.
Our Catholic Charities (CCAB) site offers English classes and a variety of other services to Boston-area refugees. Levels and class sizes depend largely on enrollment. CCAB provides rewarding opportunities to work in small groups and to adapt the curriculum to the needs of specific students.
Our MGH site works with the s immigrant employees who are part of the extensive MGH English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program. Volunteers can assist professional teachers in the ESOL computer classes, engage in one-on-one tutoring with ESOL students in need of extra help, or get involved with s Language Friendly Visitor Program. Although MGH students come from over 50 different countries, the primary spoken foreign language among the students is Spanish.
Centro Presente is a community organization devoted to helping the local Latino community access the opportunities available in the Greater Boston area through citizenship training, youth services, and English instruction. Located near Central Square, within walking distance of the Harvard campus, it offers a convenient way to become involved in the local hispanic community.
