This December 7-9th, Harvard College's Radcliffe
Union of Students, Harvard School of Public Health's Women in Public Health,
and the Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Women in the Social
Sciences propose a summit on women in academia that combine the womanpower
and resources of these groups and others. Initially titled "Harvard's campuses
and women's experience: where do we fit in?" we are specifically interested
in ways in which women at Harvard have come together in intellectual pursuits,
and have formed a women's community. We also want to address the very real
possibility that women may feel intellectually isolated, may have difficulty
navigating within the curriculum to find their interests, and may have
a need for more role models and mentors in the form of tenured female faculty.
We are seeking open, honest group discussion, panel discussion with room
for audience participation, and partnership and friendship with women across
Harvard's campuses.
Schedule of events:

ISSUES OF WOMEN AND GENDER IN THE FAS CURRICULUM.
Friday, noon, with lunch, Ticknor Lounge, Boylston
Hall.
Ever wonder why there's so much about homo and
so little about femina
economicus women in Ec 10? Been hoping for, but
not finding courses taught
by permanent faculty on women and politics? Third
world feminisms? Domestic
violence? Women and poverty? Come to a lunch
time discussion with Professor
Juliet Schor to discuss the FAS curriculum, and
the ways in which it does
and does not incorporate issues of women and
gender.
GENDER IN THE CLASSROOM
Friday, 3pm, Sever 101.
Lee Warren from the Bok Center will show videos
and open discussion on
gender in the classroom, both from the perspective
of the teacher fellow
and student. Come learn what your female
TF is really feeling, or how your
students perceive you as a teacher, and come
to work constructively on
issues of gender within the classroom.
BEYOND GENDER: OTHER ISSUES IN ACADEMIA
Saturday, noon, with lunch, Ticknor Lounge, Boylston
Hall
Representatives from girlspot, ABHW, Harvard
Islamic Society, Hillel
Women's Group and others will begin discussion
with a few remarks on
perspectives from each of their groups, then
will open it to the entire
group. How do issues of sexuality, race,
gender, and the intersectionality
of these contribute to one's experience within
an academic realm,
particularly within Harvard?
WOMEN AND ADVANCED STUDY: A DISCUSSION
Saturday, 2pm, Emerson 106
Join Cynthia Verba and Deborah Tor in a discussion
on women and advanced
study. Why should women be encouraged to
pursue degrees beyond a BA? What
is the graduate experience like for women?
How is it different from men's
experiences?
CELEBRATION!!
Saturday, 6pm, with refreshments, Loker Coffeehouse.
Come for a brief discussion on the summit, what
worked and what didn't. Listen
to Janet Hanseth and others perform. Then
*celebrate* and chill out with
other great women that you wouldn't otherwise
get to meet! Both graduate
and undergraduate students will be attending.
