The Midterm Melee

Overthrowing the Republican revolution

George W. Bush's stunning 2004 re-election victory emboldened and heartened conservatives all across America. With uncontested control of both houses of Congress, it seemed as if the last vestiges of the Democratic Party's dominance had finally disappeared. The Republican revolution of 1994 was finally and firmly ensconced in American national politics. The two years hence, however, have witnessed Republican failures across the policy spectrum. The congressional Republicans have yet to resolve the bloody stalemate in Iraq, mangled much-needed Social Security reform, failed to secure our borders from the continuing illegal-immigrant invasion, and botched their handling of the despicable Mark Foley page scandal. All of these inexcusable shortcom-ings have contributed to some of the most anemic poll numbers faced by an incumbent Congress and President in history.

Where did it all go wrong? Why has the Republican Party abandoned its conservative principles? What has happened to the Revolution? One thing is certain—the End of the Republican Revolution will be televised .
