HOLLIS & STOUGHTON

About Stoughton and Hollis
Great location - close to the square, Science Center, and if you're facing the yard, plenty of things to watch. Rooms so large you won't know what to do with the space (I give a conservative guesstimate of at least 300 square feet). All large doubles, 8 people to a floor in an entryway, with 1 public bathroom (2 sinks, 2 showers, 2 toilets) that gets cleaned daily on weekdays. 4th floor rooms get pretty beams on the ceilings. 2 entryways, 4 floors. Proctors live on third floor. If your room faces away from the Yard you have access to emergency stairs outside. Room numbers 1 - 16 are in Stoughton South, 17 - 32 are in Stoughton North (therefore numbers are not based on the floor).
Well-heated in the winter, sometimes a little too warm. No temperature control. Lighting a little on the dim side, desk lamps highly suggested. Rooms have 2 Ethernet jacks, usually by the windows. The floors are oddly slanted towards the center of the building, but summer construction should take care of that (considering that the roof collapsed a couple years ago). Laundry/recycling/trash room on the basement on the North side.
Each room's furniture includes: bed, desk + chair, additional small table + chair (depending on your luck, you might get 1 or 2 sets of these), a small mirror. Each occupant gets a large closet of his/her own, in addition to 5 wide drawers built into the wall next to the closet. Fireplaces completely blocked with ugly gray cement. We also had a slight mouse problem.
About Stoughton and Hollis
Stoughton North and South, and Hollis North and South are basically identical. They all feature doubles only, in the shape of enormous common rooms, with beds on the opposite ends of the room.
There are four rooms per floor. Floors, because of the bathroom (common to the floor), are same-sex. So guys on the first floor, girls on the second, etc. Four floors total. One proctor per entire dorm. All rooms look alike. I recommend (because this is not always the initial layout) that you put both desks in front of the windows (yes, there are two windows in the room). That also makes sense since the Ethernet jacks are positioned next to the windows. One jack may not work -- simply get a hub from the Science Center and live off one jack only.
Stoughton North is pretty nice because it features a laundry in the basement (you need to leave the entryway and enter it from the side) and a recycling center. You'll get to appreciate it when winter comes (or frequent rains!) And the best thing of all -- the science center is 30 seconds away (I checked!). If you quickly need to print something or grab a snack or if you like waking up at 10:06am, you'll still make it to class.
