HWC Shield Harvard Wireless Club Bulletin
October 9, 1998
I'm sad to report the passing of a good friend of ham radio: W1TCD, Carter Pfaelzer of Weston, MA passed away on Monday, October 5 from a massive heart attack following surgery. Carter was a former president of the Harvard Wireless Club (W1AF) during the early 50's. Not many will recognize his call. Carter has been the chief benefactor of the Harvard Wireless Club for over a decade. He funded the US1A operation in 1990 when 8 of us broke the "iron curtain" and operated jointly with hams from the USSR. He also funded the reciprocal trip by eight Russians to visit the US in October 1990 and operate the CQWW from W1AF. While Carter was content to leave much of the operating to others, he took great pleasure in making undertakings like this possible.

At the time of his passing, Carter and Fred Hopengarten (K1VR) had just successfully defeated the town of Weston, MA in their petition to erect an amateur radio tower at Carter's QTH. After a two-year fight, this would have been Weston's first amateur tower. It is sad he won't be able to enjoy this success.

When we met Carter in 1988, he had already suffered a serious stroke and had great difficulty getting around. For all that he did for the club, he never actually visited W1AF. And he never asked for anything in return for his philanthropy. He was quite a guy; those who knew W1TCD will not soon forget him.

Sincerely,
Mike Manafo, K3UOC
