Harvard Wireless Club Bulletin December 8, 1998
|
A few notes from the meeting and the past week:
- Received a nice e-mail from Maury (W3EF) over in the UK. Have shipped him off a new set of keys in
exchange for his annual dues. Maury knows the system :-) He did an outstanding job as a SO/LP/AB/UN
entry in the CQWWCW from the K1VR QTH. He broke the existing world record--outstanding!
- We had some problems with the construction people this past week regarding HWC property, so I called
a meeting with the construction people and laid out our concerns and grievances. The meeting went well.
We got future guarantees about handling any of our property, security in the building, electrical work, fire
alarm work, completing construction of the new wall upstairs and several other issues. This was all
precipitated by their having removed to 40 sloper (ripped-down) and the 80V, wrapping the legs around the
tower. They had also removed the tower grounding originally installed by Dick Dudley. Anyway, they have
agreed to pay for a new 40M dipole (how much can that really cost?) and it's installation. The tower is
grounded once again. Rest assured, they will be paying for a fair share of the KC1XX visit on the 22nd of
this month. In the meeting, I stressed the importance of communication before the fact, rather than after the
fact. Tom Murray, the project manager is a Harvard guy, so he is more than reasonable and negotiates well.
I sense we're back on track now--for the time being. K1VR has agreed to represent the HWC in the event
future problems arise that are too large for reasonable minds to work out.
- The 735 is truly ailing. I've taken it out of line on the 2nd position and will send it off for repair. In the
meantime, my backup 736 in in-line. Nice little radio. The only thing we're missing is an antenna for that
position now :-)
- Of course, a solution is forthcoming. This Saturday 12/12 we're having a little roof party. I'll be there,
so will K1XQ and Frank Wright, the HWC President. Three items on the agenda: disassemble the old Hy-
Gain and Ringo and get it off the roof, disassemble the scaffolding which is still up from the VHF antenna
raising, and assemble and mount the R-7 as a temporary 2nd position antenna. I'm still looking for a pair of
building side-mounting brackets (the type that bolt into the building with 2 U-clamps. Since the demise of
TV antennas, these are tough to locate. If I strike out, we'll put the R-7 up on Bill's circular platform mount.
We've got the RG-213 run from the old doublet to feed it with. All hands welcome for the roof party.
- At the meeting last evening, it was Dave Smith, Frank and myself. Missing Tim, Nick, Bill & MaryAnne.
Dave is going to create a mock-up for a new W1AF QSL. I've got some new photos of the shack being
developed so he will pick one and come up with something reflecting the 90th anniversary year. Dave is in
digital imaging, so he's got the technology to do something nice. The three of us talked lots of things and
spent time reviewing CT as the station logging program. Next Tuesday's meeting (12/15) again at 7:00PM.
Off to work. I'm screening Ph.D. applications for GSAS now. Interesting stuff.
73, Mike
