HWC Shield Harvard Wireless Club Bulletin
December 13, 1998
And a fun time was had by all. Thanks to Bill, Frank and my brother-in law Eric for help on the roof yesterday. All construction supervisors were on tour of the building yesterday and got to see the HWC in action. Good PR for us and another illustration that we are serious about preserving what belongs to the HWC. We are now caught-up with roof work for the time being. Here's what we got done:

  1. Disassembled the Explorer 14, Ringo Ranger and old rotor. Discarded all except for the mast and upper mast which might be able to be used again. Cleaned up the far section of the roof after disassembly.

  2. Put 2 new PL-259s on the old runs from the mast. The upper ends of both coax runs had nasty cuts and tears from wrapping around the rotor (3 loops, no less). Also salvaged most of the rotor cable from the old setup.

  3. Moved the scaffolding around, moved the VHF array into position and brought the 2M yagi in the same horizontal plane with the 440 yagi by virtue of the Armstrong method. If this is clear as mud, ask Bill about it.

  4. Disassembled the scaffolding on the roof and moved all to our storage room. Located extra pieces scattered throughout the building and also stowed these in our area. Will use this staging for painting the room in the new year.

  5. Assembled the R-7 vertical, guyed it, tested it. Works beautifully! Nice to have the RF Analyzer to check resonance beforehand. Fed the vertical with one run from the scrapped mast setup.

  6. Removed the coax run from the old doublet. Construction people had asked us to get this out of their way. No problem.

  7. Pulled in a cable for a preamplifier for the VHF array which had never been finished last year.

  8. Disassembled and saved the partially assembled 6M beam (from last year) which had been left on the roof.

Good thing we got all this done as we will have no access to the roof for the next week; the mezzanine overlooking the former squash courts is being ripped out tomorrow. The construction foreman has guaranteed access on the 22nd when Matt comes down.

Also fixed up Bill & Maryanne with keys. And HWC dues paid. Discovered a set of keys missing from the key box. Yet another reason to worry about HWC security.

Thanks again to those who pitched-in for the roof party. Can't remember the last time I ever crossed everything off of a to-do list :-) Last meeting of the year on the 15th, 7:00 PM. We'll pick it up again officially in the new year.
