Harvard Wireless Club Bulletin December 15, 1998
|
Wrap-up from the meeting last evening: Myself, Bill, and Nick Gaydosh (N2MSE, undergrad member) had a
nice little session. Frank couldn't attend as he had a lab to cover last evening. Both Frank and Nick are
having a very busy term. Here's hoping things lighten-up for them in 1999.
- First of all, we've had a very good week dealing with the construction people. The meeting last week
with the project manager seemed to do the trick. The new wall upstairs has now been installed--drywall,
fully taped and plastered-over. Ready for painting in the new year. 4 outlets have been installed on the wall;
to be wired soon, I am told.
- Bill and I tie-wrapped the cable assemblies coming into the shack. Because of the new pipes in the outer
room (and the removal of the old pipes) the coax runs needed some big-time work. The old pipes had
provided support for most of the runs. Bill fondly remembered Maury's cable-wrapping prowess in years'
past. I had forgotten that. I thought I was the king of cable-wrap! Bill assured me that Maury was the
undisputed champ :-)
- We three then built a 40M dipole to replace the 40 EU sloper that had been ripped-down during
construction. It looks good! We salvaged the original center tap - a Van Gorden tap, I think it is. Seems to
have held up fairly well since it went up almost 10 years ago. New #14 coated wire replaced the old
stranded wire. The RG-213 coax run is still intact. Matt will reinstall this assembly on the tower for us.
Harvard picks up the tab for materials and installation.
- Bill is looking into being at the club on the 22nd when KC1XX comes. We both agree it is important to
have a HWC rep. on hand while he is there to avoid any problems with the construction people. I'll be in PA
from the 20th-23rd.
- Nick & I talked about the HWC from the undergrad perspective. He will keep his eyes open for new
prospective undergrad members, especially women or minorities. We all agree that undergrad recruitment
should be a priority for the new year. Nick has also paid his dues and will be picking up his new keys from
Frank.
- Larry Mulvahill (WB2ZPI) confirmed that he will be coming to Boston in February or early March to
shoot the HWC shack for a CQ cover. He liked the several shots that I sent him to give him some ideas for
camera angles. Here's hoping we can coordinate publication with our 90th special event operation. This is
an excellent recruitment opportunity for us as well as a chance to cast the HWC in a favorable light (once
again) with the university authorities.
We finished-up at @ 9:00 PM. No meetings for the next several weeks; to start up again on 1/5 for those of
us who will be here.
Happy Holidays!
