HWC Shield Harvard Wireless Club Bulletin
January 12, 1999
Another busy week at the HWC. On Sunday, I set up another electrical surge protector on HF position 2, wired up an external keyer and new Bencher paddle and came up with a list of items to discuss with the building renovation people. On Monday, I met with Tom Murray, the project manager. We came up with the following from that meeting:

  1. Harvard agreed to pick up 100% of Matt's antenna work bill ($509) since much of what he did was to repair damage from construction. I turned the XX invoice over to Tom and they will reimburse Matt w/i 30 days.

  2. Tom volunteered to carpet the club room--their expense. I didn't ask for this; he volunteered. Harvard carpet people will be in Thursday or Friday with some swatches and then, if all goes on schedule, we'll have carpeting next week.

  3. We seem to be losing ground on the sprinkler system issue. They are pressing us hard to be able to install sprinklers in the shack. The work was actually scheduled for today. I have stalled this until I find out if we can get a rider on our insurance policy from Albert Wholers Co. that will cover water damage. As it stands now, the insurance does not cover sprinkler damage in the event of an 'accident,' I am pressing Harvard to come up with a non-water fire safety alternative. I may lose this argument. Brace yourself. This is a tough issue.

  4. We are losing our door to the roof. The renovation plans do not include a ladder to the door. However, I bargained for (and got) access through a new hatch door to the ceiling to be installed next to the old women's changing room. We are not about to be denied access to the roof.

  5. The construction people pulled box upon box of Satish's stored stuff from up above the women's changing room. I gave them permission to dispose of it all, into the trash. Satish had years to reclaim his possessions. He never did.

  6. The electrical main for the building is now going to be located in the basement rather than in our outer room. That's good news.

  7. The construction people agreed to finish the wiring of the clubroom ASAP. We're ready for some juice up there.
Our painter finished his work this week. The room is really shaping up now. Brad used over 45 lbs of plaster patch to smooth out the walls and ceiling before painting. We paid $750 for this job, but it was well worth it. Gorgeous!

Tim McBride has resigned as Station Manager and has quit the HWC. I had asked Tim last week to reimburse the club for his very large phone charges and to return the club equipment he had lent out. He has paid his bill in full, returned the equipment and resigned.

I've been in touch with PSI, our Sanyo heating/cooling people. The wall unit is spitting black soot again as it did in 1995. They will be coming over to the club soon to take the unit apart and replace some parts. Last time, this cost us $225. I expect a similar charge this time. We're not doing anything wrong here--the unit is 9 years old and problems do develop.

At the meeting this evening, Frank & I worked our tails off rearranging the clubroom and moving everything to the far end of the room. This is so the carpet people can do their work on one half of the room (initially) then we will move everything to the carpeted half so they may complete their installation. Lots of old junk went into the construction dumpster. We hung on to anything of value. Don't worry. It will take several more months to get this room really set, but when it is, you'll be amazed, I guarantee it. This will be a fine spot for our meetings, for exams, for browsing through materials or just for a little lounging. We always knew this room had potential!

Bill didn't make the meeting. He forgot! But he did call in. Dave neither--he left a note in the log to that effect. Nick sent an e-mail that he was swamped with exams, so Frank and I carried the ball. Hope to see all next week (1/19) when we may actually try and get on the air. That would be nice! Are we too late for the ZL9?
